Default Tiger fish at Jozini Lake / Pongolopoort dam

Just home from a 14 day road trip, camping / fishing / loafing around Kruger. Spend a morning (21 June 2015) on Jozini with a guide hunting Tiger fish, we landed 23! All juveniles and all released unharmed. Bait, pilchard on a 5.0 hook, drop it next to the water grass and slowly reel in, strike hard and fast when you get a nibble.

Very lekker! Juvenile or not, still loads of fun. Heading there again in September. Want to give the river a go, some big boys swimming around there.

Hi, thinking of going up early August. Any recommended fishing outfits that we can hire some tackle/boat etc?

I used an outfit that came from Tiger Lodge, the booking agent was Rachel Reservations [[email protected]], If you can take your own tackle, there's is cheap and old. Its adequate but if yiu have an option take your own. The guide was good, Other novices and pro's hanging around the camp caught almost nothing. From our perspective, well worth the expense. The going rate is R500 to R700 per each for a half day. Shop around.

You can have a look at Shayamoya where we are staying in September. They have boats. Taking our own tackle but they can also supply if required (only trust my own tackle )

We are staying in the bush camp, exclusively booked for one group at a time so peace and quiet is guaranteed and the price is very reasonable. Camp can only be reached by 4x4 apparently

I will post info on accommodation and boat hire rates tomorrow

Hi, thanks for replies to enquiries on another post. Eventually decided to stay at Fish Eagle Campsite (SWAMBOs would not have been happy with Long drops and no hot water at some other places). Fish Eagle ok, with clean ablutions and reasonable (although a bit rocky) campsites. Quite a lot of trees. Suspect that ablutions will struggle when its full. Allow 6 hours from Johannesburg due to stop/gos and trucks. Also LOTS of hooligans on the road, especially coming back on Monday. Slow going between Piet Retief and Jozini. Caught 7 tiny tigers between 2 of us - used Extreme Nature Tours - R900 pp including guide and gear.

Someone know what the dam level is like at Jozini these days?

Haven't visited in 2 or so years and the dam was very low back then..

i have fished there every year for the last 20 years. Fished there in April this year and we had the best results in the last 5 years. Last few years we have been pulling out on average 300mm fish, this year the average was 400mm with the winning fish been over 600mm. Not only was the size better but we were all catching much more. Dam level is currently 45% but was as low as 26% 2 years ago.

The SAPS Water Wing are doing a sterling job in removing the gill nets and arresting the perpetrators.
