Default 2005 WK 3.0 CRD Battery Light

The battery light on the WK comes on intermittently. From what I have read up on it points to a possible alternator issue Is this accurate?

Voltage across the terminals when running is 12.1V

If alternator, will it be an intermittent warning?
Recommendations on where to source new alternator if it turns out to be the case would be appreciated (Randburg/Gauteng).

12.1V is way too low. It sounds like your alternator is dead and the battery is nearly flat. A full battery should read around 12.7/12.8V and an alternator should supply between 13.5V and 14.7V depending on the state of the battery.

Thanks HG. Will have the alternator replaced. Needed this like a hole in the head.

Try and get it tested first before just replacing..... but that would for sure be my guess.

I would say more likely culprit is a dead cell in your battery. I've had 2 batteries go out like this over the years.

Take it to your nearest decent battery dealer and have it tested. Do not skimp on the replacement. Make sure it has enough Cold Cranking Amps. If they don't have the right one in stock, phone around.

Will take it today to get tested.

The last 2 occasions where the battery died they just went dead. This time the light is coming on intermittently which is why I assumed alternator as opposed to battery.

Went to Battery Centre to test and it turns out it is the alternator (battery tested ok).

Now we start trying to source one. Dealer pricing is an eye-watering R 16 494.02.........

Rockauto has a few remanufactured options, and 1 new. Prices between $200 and $370. With fees, VAT and duties it should still be about half the dealers' price even if you take the most expensive one.

Can't you have it fixed rather than replace. There was a guy who fixed mine in PTA for the D3 at a fraction of the price of a new alternator.

I bought one for my WK some time ago from Midas (www.abemidas.co.za). Maybe worthwhile to give them a call for pricing.

The alternator is directly below the engine oil filling hole. Apparently if you spill oil, it drips on the alternator killing it...

Going to see if I can source locally before going the importing route. But pricing does not look too bad comparatively.

That is also an option. Can you recall the name of the establishment that remanufactured your unit?

Not overly keen to use Midas due to past issues, but will drop them a quote request.

I noted that when looking for the how-to's on replacing the unit. Apparently there is some sort of shield that is placed over it to prevent damage in the event of spilling oil when topping up or refilling.

OK, remember this is a Merc engine so possibly they will also stock.

Seems these are the Merc part numbers.

They all seemed to be made by Valeo.

It seems the WK and WK2 is the same as the Discovery 3 & 4: luxury barges that need expensive repairs? R17k for an intelligent alternator is nuts.

I have yet to find a Merc dealership that even bothers responding to queries related to the Jeep even though I usually premise the query by stating that it a Merc-sourced motor.

Was quite taken aback by the price Jeep quoted as when I was looking for an upper radiator hose, they were more cost effective than other suppliers.

An update on sourcing the alternator:

ABEMidas - Could not be bothered to respond (as I suspected)
Diesel-Electric - Could not be bothered to respond
Desamark (Marketing Arm for D-E) - Unhelpful and somewhat rude
Caelex - Could not be bothered to respond
Bosch (Direct and various service centres) - Could not be bothered to respond
Masterparts - Could not be bothered to respond

The only person who was helpful was Div de Villiers although he doubts that it can be repaired due to lack of spares locally.

Looks like an import it will have to be.

It's a pity Div can't help. He is one of very few who could do the Disco 3 alternator.

I wonder if you shouldn't perhaps take it to him after you have sourced a replacement, maybe use that as a test unit to see if he can find the stuff to fix it. Could end up saving a few people a couple of bucks.
