Question Capturing surprise situations while driving.

Recently ( 2 weeks ago) we had a nervous wrecking experience with an elephant bull, on the Red Rocks dirt road near Shingwedzi, where I had to reverse for approximately 150 meters to get away from a charging bull elephant.

    Two things did not happen:
    1. The elephant did not catch up with us.
    2. We did not and could not record this event.

    Now my question is:
What is the best way to video record a trip where this may or may not happen again, and after the event, replace say the memory card in the recording device with a blank one.
Then afterwards save this recording to a more permanent device? The permanent device being a laptop or PC which we already have.
These trips may be several hours in duration.
All this with a budget of between R3000.00 and R5000.00?

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Kind regards.

My dash-cam with a 32GB card can record 8 hours driving at 720p.

With your budget you will be able to buy a very decent quality camera.

Sample video taken yesterday, I do not have a fast enough card in my camera so I dropped quality to 720p to avoid missing frames when saving.

i have a garmin 65. I have a 64 card, once full it writes over the old "not saved" data.

Your passenger can connect to it with phone and down load, while in the car.
Or down load when you get home by plugging it into a computer.
You can save the video or photo- voice activated or push button and it is saved. Or just say "garmin save video" or "garmin save photo" and done.
the card is big enough to save many, many trips.

Switches on when ignition is on.

camera very clear even at night.

For Transkei driving "the stay in your lane assist" does not work as the roads are too twisty. thank fully unlike backseat drivers it can be switched off and silenced.

On my EagleEye dashcam I have set the unit to save a clip every 10minutes. If something happens while saving, I will most likely only loose 10 minutes of my trip. As Kobus said, 8hrs recording at 720k on a 32Gb card.

Maybe check if the unit you are looking for has similar functionality.
