Default Not quite a "softroader" Diahatsu inside

    O wee

So my ever present itch just got a little bit of a scratch today.

    I bought a Diahatsu Rocky 4x4 - think its a 2001 model.

Drives like a 1989 Hilux more or less - like an old school little lorrie.

Its got a 2.8 turbo diesel of some diahatsu kind - not sure if its their own design or some other jap variable. Its even inter-cooled

Its not a softroader but there isnt a section for Diahatsu on the forum - its got a transfer box 2H 4H 4L and manual hub locks up front, sitting on a ladder frame.

Tough little thing, it is built like a mini tank. Even the aircon is still working, but the passenger side electric window aint working.

Its done 333,000 kilos allready and a bit cosmetically challenged but everything still works but the one window, and its got the obligatory oil leak somewhere on the engine that will need attention as my driveway aint liking it and it aint a landrover

    What you'all think?

Will take off the bumpers and the plastic corner pieces and grill and paint them nice and black again so that at least it looks a bit better.

I hope its not the rear crank seal that is leaking - cant quite figure out where the leak is, but seems its somewhere near the turbo perhaps oil filter or the oil sender unit that is under a bunch of stuff on that side.

I guess parts might be a bit of an issue with this lesser known 4x4, and seems it was only sold in SA from 98 - 2001 and not very popular at that time.

Looking at an old Car Mag its list price in 2001 was about R180k - thats a LOT for this old school type vehicle no wonder they did not sell a lot.

But Its gonna be my toy, not a daily driver.

Were those engines and gearboxes not sourced from Toyota like they did with the later Terios models? Our Terios even had Toyota printed under the mirrors.

A lot of the stuff seems toyota-like but that engine I dont know much about - is a pushrod design and not all that powerfull but it runs OK and drives fine. It does seem a bit wallowy when I drive, short wheel base on coil springs - kinda like driving a bowl of jelly

But anyhow - want to go find some gravel and test the drivetrain and see if it still works - hopefully I did not just moered a couple R's in the water. If it dies Ill sell it for spares or something.

Ja nogal I get that destinct impression also. I can see the dna in it.

Well took it for a little offroading now, and all seem fine transfer does its job no funny sounds, besides the bloody back door that rattles a bit.

The 4x4 lights on the dash doesnt light up when in 4x4 but doesnt really matter - its got a little stokkie mos.

Could be the turbo oil drain pipe (under turbo) that goes to the sump. Gaskets go hard from the heat.

I paid R45k for it - perhaps too much but other than the oil leak, the one window not working and a slight clutch shudder everything works.

Put it on ramps this morning and traced the oil leak. Glad it is not the rear crank main seal - its the gasket where the oil cooler and sensor assembly attached to the block where there is seepage - so a new gasket is needed. Also a brittle water pipe that is connected there will need replacement. Not bad for 333,000 kilos and 18 years of hard life.

Its gonna be a fun project - hope I will be able to get parts for it - first thing is new brake pads up front and perhaps scheming of brake disks will be needed although it brakes fine for now.

Its really a low revving grunty engine - it has no problem chugging along in 4H without much struggle - I cant seem to feel much of a turbo lag, or its not very noticable when the turbo kicks in - very linear pulling power. Engine is really nice on it and a good fit for this specific vehicle.

That would be an indirect injection engine with pre-combustion chambers, and those are the only weak points. The I-C was a factory fit later, and allowed 75kW.

Engine is a DAIHATSU DL-52 Turbo Diesel ..............

    Cool thanks Jelo

Been busy with the passenger sider door window that doesnt work. Took door panel off and tested the harness, its got 12v and motor does run up and down when I power it with an external 12v battery. Looks like the switch itself is fubar. It changes polarity to power the motor up or down - no fancy auto up or down on that side.

Just strange that both the one on that door, as well as the master control on the driver doesnt open that window - can they both just fail like that? The driver window works fine though.

Dont know where I can source such a switch - been googling and ebaying and and but cant seem to find anything.

If all fails Ill just get a universal switch and make it fit on the plastic insert where the old one is.
