Yip, unfortunately T4A doesn't cut it for me anymore, personally, of course. My version falls out of the "free upgrade" so I turfed it. I just don't have a use for it anymore and I don't see why pay for low detail maps with some way-points or POI's.
With a combination of Africa OSM Topo - Routable and the forums, I manage just fine.
The maps have lots of detail. I even use this on my Garmin now full time. Add in my own way points to where I want to go, read the forums where not to go, and add them in. I was also looking at Gaia GPS, but it is not standalone. One has to download map sections, and it's a pain.

Google Maps. All you need is to download the map before you go.

I have been impressed with Sygic (200m users).
Seems to offer more detail than Google and has excellent display. The free version has allowed me to download all the maps I need. Android, iPad and iPhone.

    https://www.sygic.com/gps-navigation

I have 4 different Map apps on the phone and have a quick look before travelling to see which has the best detail on the particular area. Even the open source apps seem to vary.

Anton Moolman; Iíve been using Maps.Me for many years, surprisingly good in the most remote areas of Zambia, Kenya, USA, Europe etc (every off road track in game reserves for instance). I would advise you to get as many options as you can as I found with all them, even Google offline maps there are inaccuracies; also a paper may back is helpful. What I really like about Maps.Me is Iíve collected thousands of waypoints over the years which are saved and I can send these to friends or my other devices

I plot an intended route and waypoints in google maps my places then export and load in maps.me has worked well locally and abroad, just download the extra area map detail before going.

I have to say, compared to Google Maps, Maps.me and Here We Go it seems the best suited for offroad use, it shows a lot more tracks than any of the others or even all of them combined. The terrain contour feature allows you to orientate yourself better, I would think and the app seems to have a breadcrumb function.
It will be tested in Damaraland the next couple of days.

    OSMAnd for sure!

It got me to a very remote destination in the Algarve in Portugal 3 weeks ago at night when Google Maps didn't work...
I downloaded the maps at home before my travels to UK and Portugal.

Maps.Me also OK. Used it on different phone in UK 2 weeks ago when Google Maps lost signal out in the sticks in the UK.

    This ^

Did it in South Namibia / Richtersveld recently, worked just fine.

There was zero reception in the Richtersveld, but the downloaded maps did the job.

Off we went into the Messum crater and surroundings and Open Street Maps OSMAnd was spot on. Whether we just used it to show our current position or to navigate to certain points, it worked very well. And this is now navigating on tracks, not even district roads. Most of those tracks don't show on Google Maps.

On Google maps & HERE there are a lot of street names missing in the new areas of Swakopmund. OSM has got most of them, as does MAPS.me.

My vote is also for OsmAnd.

All the free offline maps (osmand, maps.me....) make use of Openstreetmap.

a caution with google maps and routing in countryside . 2 years ago i routed from kareedouw to baviaans lodge using google maps. Google listed two routes and the faster one entered private land on a track that was totally impassable and I really mean dangerously so . I got permission to enter but turned back at the first cliff side washaway . The lodge told me afterwards the track was last driven in 2008 and was fenced off and totally overgrown with black wattle. I reported this to google but the situation has not changed , still routes this way today. Take care but i must add I have had great success with it otherwise .
