Default 4500km and a Coke can

So we zig zagged through Lesotho.
Some gravel roads and some tar roads.
Then we went up to Orpen gate to tackle the Sweni trail in Kruger (on foot)

South of Lesotho after Aliwal North I heard an odd sound from the engine.
The alternator front pully was scraping against the alternator body.

Now in 2017 I took a good working alternator to an auto electrician to replace the bearings as a service item.

Lucky i always carry SHOW STOPPING ITEMS in my spares kit so bearings are no problem.
When I found someone with a vice he could press the old ones out and we noticed the front bearing housing looked worn as the old bearing seemed fine.
So out comes a coke can, cut into a shim and pressed the bearing in with the coke shim.

    Lasted the entire trip.
Note to self: Next time load that Brand new 100 amp alternator you bought a month ago

In appy school they also taught us to take a centre punch and give a few pop marks in the housing to make the bearing a tighter fit, alternatively you could carry a tube of Loctite bearing fit
