Thumbs down 24 people on a bakkie

10 dead and 14 injured. Bakkie is overloaded by mass and center of gravity is high, brakes and tires no good. Sadly this kind of loading is daily occurrence.

    Condolences to the families

Ou Kaapse Weg is the longest steep downhill in the Peninsula. Red Hill is also steep, but not as fast.

A friend of mine crashed at the hairpin bend on his bicycle because his brakes totally overheated, and at that point he was going at a break neck speed.

An acquaintance in the motor repair business from this part of the woods tells me the cause they have to replace warped front discs is mostly caused by overheating down Ou Kaapse Weg.

People have "forgotten" what they were taught when learning to drive, not using the gearbox/engine to do the bulk braking work.

I have often gone down Ou Kaapse Weg after gearing down. The row of traffic in front of me mostly have brake lights illuminated all the way down. Younger drivers just aren't taught to gear down on long hills.

    K53 makes its very clear.

    • Depress clutch pedal.
    • Obtain clutch control.
    • Avoid unjustified “Slipping” of the clutch.
    • Avoid unjustified “Riding” of the clutch.
    • Avoid unjustified “Coasting”.
    • Remove foot completely form clutch pedal except for purpose of gear changing, stopping, justified “Slipping”, “Riding”, or “Coasting”.
    • Disengage clutch completely just before vehicle is brought to a complete standstill, without labouring or stalling engine.

    Changing Gears

    • Maintain speed.
    • Place left foot on clutch pedal.
    • Start depressing clutch approximately to contact point.
    • Release accelerator pedal smoothly and completely whilst depressing clutch pedal completely.
    • Place right foot on accelerator pedal.
    • Select gear.
    • Replace hand to appropriate position on steering wheel.
    • Start releasing clutch pedal slowly and smoothly to contact point.
    • Depress accelerator pedal smoothly and progressively whilst releasing clutch pedal completely.
    • Remove foot completely from clutch pedal.

Perhaps the fact that there were 24 people in transit might have had something to do with it.

I generally go down the hill in the same gear I would go up it. Hardly ever need to use brakes

Yip. Assume a weight per person of 60kg (arbitrary number) and x that by 24 and the vehicle (bakkie) is already overloaded

First and foremost - lives were lost. Whatever the circumstances, they are dead. Some seriously injured, some traumatised by a horrific accident. Never underestimate the hurt and loss of others.

Those of you who always abide by the rules, have never skipped a stop street, never crossed a red robot, never done a bit of speeding, never forgot a safety belt, never had slightly worn tires, never over-loaded your vehicles.... I guess you should be the only ones throwing stones here.

The rest of us should probably be grateful we never make mistakes that cost other people's their lives.

The fact that overloading, speeding, non-roadworthy vehicles are part of daily living in South Africa - is unacceptably sad and deprive families of their of bread-winners, dads, mom, sons, daughters, friends etc, and cost our economy millions. Most accidents can be prevented. That is what should be focussed on.

Investigations are in early stages but one article mentioned "no brakes at the time of accident". If that is the case considering heavy load and long downhill destroyed the brakes. After that not much hope. I see so many drivers not understanding: Go down a hill on gearbox and engine brake.

Thumbs down Re: 24 people on a bakkie

Unfortunately, this sort of thing is all too common! And nothing new either!
In 1991, when I worked for CBS in Cape Town, I was called out to investigate a "Brake Failure" in Bloukrans Pass. 7 ton truck loaded with over 9 tons of concrete lintels AND 11 workers, went over the edge on the third corner going down fro the PE side. Needless to say, all deceased, including the driver.
What had transpired, apart from the overloading and the carrying of passengers on top of the load, was that the truck owner, had had the truck in a workshop in PE, where they had removed the rear brake cylinders to send for repairs, blanked off the pipe to the pipe to the rear brakes and put the truck back to work! When I did the inspection, the front drums were blue from heat, and full of cracks, and the brake shoes had turned to charcoal, and basically disintegrated!
But yes, condolences and hopes that those injured will heal!
