I think you are going to have a major problem finding a place in SA where no crime has ever taken place.

The risk always exists, that even those places (if you find them), could be next on the list.

I refuse to live in fear - I spend a lot of time in the Transkei.

And the same thing could happen at any of those places - we live in a beautiful country but sadly riddled with very violent crime!!

Agreed. But whats the alternative? Stay at home under lock and key for the rest of our lives? Visited all those place 3 months ago with no issues whatsoever.

The problem is that the crime will follow wherever you go... You/WE are the cash-cows.

Not quite true.... Unfortunately crime is everywhere, and a lot of very violent crime we do not see or hear of because it happens in the townships and the rural areas.

Not to derail the thread, and not arguing your point, and a valid one, albeit, I think you misunderstood my comment. I was referring to crime against holiday makers..

Just going through threads on this forum, it seems a whole new industry has arisen targeting campers and overlanders

Im not sure I agree 100%. Some resorts have gone to extreme lengths to ensure that security is sorted. What I do agree with is that crime can happen anywhere and for that reason Id rather pick Righters veld or Cederberg and the like.

On the 24 December last we did the unthinkable and went to Port St Johns town. It might as well have been Kasi in the DRC or any town in the middle of Afrika where Westerners rarely frequent.

At one point, heading towards the river mouth, two metro cops were as drunk as coots in the middle of the road. The ones pistol was unlatched and could easily unholster let alone be taken from him. That aside, imagine being confronted by them.

    Scary stuff

Estee, that started some time ago... with resorts and camps putting up fences...

Funny thing is, I just hate looking out at the wilderness through a fence (not sure if it's there to keep me in or others out) as it changes the whole atmosphere and sense of freedom for me... the openness being the whole point of my destination.

Then the missus comments on how much safer she feels with the fence...

I still disagree... I think that because of social media, cell phones, tablets, access to the internet being so much more available than it was 30 years ago, we just hear more about it.

I remember as a kid camping at Pennington on the South coast (early 80's) our tent being opened and our camping gear ect stolen.
Same thing many years ago camping at Hennops and Swartkops.
Campers and holiday makers are easy targets because they are in the river swimming, or at the beach, or on a game drive.

And I do agree that crime without a doubt has increased across the board. Not just the camping folk stats.

I think its important to mention that one should be aware of your surroundings, tent or chalet. Not to be falling around after the braai into the tent etc.

A bit of a defeatist attitude there with them offering the refund so quickly? Do they maybe realise they arent going to get things under control there I wonder?
