Net vir interessantheid, Putsonderwater se naam is nie put-sonder-water nie. Die ou mense het nie van 'n put gepraat nie, maar van 'n puts, dus is die betekenis eintlik puts-onder-water.

Strangely enough, this place came up in a video I was watching by ASPW so I did a bit of Googling and a very interesting history emerged regarding how it got its name (a couple of stories on how it got its name but all interesting) but I couldnt find anything on why it was abandoned.

Can anyone tell me why the people decided to leave, lack of water?

Estee, I think the last station master there left in 1989 because the the importance of the railway line had waned. It is situated on the once-bustling De Aar - Suidwes-Afrika trajectory that lost its importance as independence in Namibia was imminent.

Thanks Jens, makes sense as a lot of the buildings appear to be old SAR houses etc.

One of the stories that cam up in my search was that some Voortrekkers stopped on a pan and it rained. The water level rose to submerge the tar buckets (used for lubricating the wheels) suspended under the wagons. These were apparently called Putz or Puts and that the name was actually Puts Onder Water or Puts underwater

Interesting, whatever the reason for its name.

From what I understand from farmers in the area, there were a lot of passenger trains that were serviced by the station when they went through Putsonderwater (starting from steam locomotive days). Also the feldspar and rose quartz from quarries nearby was loaded at the station. All that activity died down, but the article below explains it better.

    https://mg.co.za/article/2009-08-05-...without-people

Extract... "First recurring droughts brought the cattle trade to an end and then the passenger trains stopped running. Slowly the police station and post office followed the hotel and general dealership, closing down as people left the village—never to return. The station, the heart of the village, stopped beating around the turn of the century when the few passing freight trains no longer had any need to stop. But the primary school kept going for quite a while, mainly owing to the efforts of Ena Hough (now 69), who worked there from 1994 to 2004. “Before, the textbooks, the drinking water, everything, came by train,” she says. “Later on trucks replaced them.”
The remaining inhabitants did piece work, hunting jackal or working on the farms, while their children went to school. “We had big fętes at the school with neighbouring farms donating a sheep or two. We even created a soccer field and netball court; I chalked the lines myself, my husband welded the posts.” A mobile clinic and mobile library made their way to Putsonderwater, a feeding scheme was introduced. Yet fewer people saw any reason to stay on."

Baie interessant. Wonder watter gebou was gebruik as skool? Die een was duidelik 'n winkel en die ander 'n tipe hotel/losies huis en dan net huisies Sou die graag wou weet voor ons daar was dan kon ek meer gekyk het.
