Gents and ladies your help and insight is much appreciated.
Good used Grand Hemi for 250K.
Same consumption as a V6 Prado.
The 100K you save can buy a lot of gas.

Not the answer you are looking for but, I would -

    1. Sell the Triton
    2. Up your budget to R420k
    3. Buy a Ranger or Amarok
    4. Buy extended warranty
    5. Kit it out well so that it can be both your daily and overland vehicle

Now you save on all repair bills on the Triton, save on insurance, more parking space, better car for long trips.

I have owned an FJ, Prado 120, Amaroks, new and old Fortuners.

Car that gave me the biggest thrill (by far), but not practical = FJ
Car that impressed the most in terms of comfort and capability = Amarok by miles
Car that disappointed the most = New Fortuner, it started rusting and quality didn't seem good.

Prado 120 had the best combination of all the cars considering its a good R100k cheaper, its dated but has already lost most of its value so you cant go wrong with a R250k budget. Just replace the usual pumps, cooling system, belts etc and you have yourself an unstoppable reliable beaut!

Luckily the repair costs was still under warrenty but as said i lost 100k on selling because of VW incompetence. After owning 7 VW's in my life, i will NEVER own one again.
I had similar experience with VW product. Audi actually.
I have always owned a VW product, my first vehicle was a Golf.
I will now be selling my last VW product, and hopefully never own one again.

It is something you have answered yourself already

You have a Mitsubishi product which you are every happy with.

    Simple answer, A Pajero.

Best value for money capable 4x4 on the market.

Most comfortable seating, and heated seats for winter mornings.

    Massive loading area.

Independent suspension all round and disc brakes all round.

Will stand it's ground against ANY other 4x4.

    Low servicing costs.

One of the lightest fuel consumption vehicles in it's class, specially knowing the others are 4.0 liter and 5.0 liter and some times even bigger engines.

Parts are easily available and importantly there was only one diesel motor used in Southern Africa, so no matter where you go you will find somebody to assist you, not that they ever let you down.

Read any report and the first word that comes up is reliability, time and time again.

Petrol's are a little heavier on juice but are just as hardy.

Your choice is a Pajero 5 door.

    For R350k

if you not worried about petrol or diesel but insisting on automatic i'd buy one of these:

    - Nissan Patrol 4.8 Auto
    - Toyota Prado 150 4.0V6 Auto

Otherwise, if fuel is an issue, and you want economy but prepared to take a manual:

    - Nissan Patrol 3.0 CRD Manual
    - Toyota Prado 150 3.0 D4D Manual

Supremely comfortable, supremely capable, fits in your price range, and both will last a VERY long time.

    Thanks for this thread.

I am in almost exactly the same boat. Certainly 1-7, except the baba comes in the form of two huskies. So a good quality aircon is an absolute MUST.

Wife and I have until recently had two by Merc C270cdi 2005 and 2006. The 2006 is an estate with almost 500,000km. It has been some strange places, and once had to be towed out of the sand in Mozambique.

We have given the cars to our two boys who have headed out into the adult world. All our household stuff is in storage.

We are about to head into the rest of South Africa to find another town to live in, free of the heavy overhead from the kids. Our business is on two laptops and the cloud, and we have clients all over SA. So we just need electricity and internet.

We have pretty much settled on getting an auto diesel Fortuner. But this thread has given us some late stage food for thought. We always do a lot of shopping around.

    How tall is wife ?

Because: Wife and baba= lots of, pram in and out of boot, baba in carry cot in and out of seat.

If you have a high vehicle and petite/short wife, these tasks will be difficult for her.

Sounds like an FJ Cruiser would be perfect for you. The very steep windscreen and small windows around keep the temperature in the cabin down like now other. It is the coolest vehicle temperature wise I have ever owned. Even my 60 series cruiser gets a lot warmer inside.
The suicide doors are ideal for dogs to get in and out
We got an XXL and a M dog, a friend of mine got 2 Weimaraners and goes camping with his FJ and the dogs.

Plus, with an FJ Cruiser you get Prado tech & quality for Fortuner money, or even less.

Although a good suggestion, I think you'll choke to death on Husky hair in an FJ. Need them further back I would reckon

Yarwell, you cannot be worried about fur infiltrating every orifice if you like huskies. We even bought an industrial vacuum cleaner for our home. I recon a 40 seater school bus wouldn't solve that problem.

Good suggestion. Hadn't even considered that option. Will definitely take a look. I just need to keep in mind space for a cargo barrier to keep them from trying to get into the front.
