Default (Quick) Advise PLEASE - EI timing on Toyota 2F??

Hi Guys, sorry for the request for "Quick" advise, but my 60 Series 2F is at the mecchie for a service now, and I really want everything checked and done 100%.

It has Electronic Ignition fitted - I dunno what make.

    Question :

I've read somewhere that the timing on an EI motor (2/3F) should be set some degrees in advance..........I distinctly remember reading that somewhere.

Car doesnt ping or anything - I just needed everything to be 100% within specs, while its at the workshop now.

Anybody knows about this, is it necessary to do it like that, or am I over analyzing (probably) here??

    THANKS!!!

Isn't there a metal plate with the timing specs riveted into the engine compartment?

Hugo yes, but this has electronic ignition, and I remember that timing should be set one or dergrees in advance or something like that (I'm VERY dom with these stuff).

IF and ONLY if it's "safe"...........dont want to go drop a valve, those old F's love doing that

It makes no difference if timing is electronic or by points the advance must still be the same( It is still a spark that is delivered)! On the 2F it is 7 degrees btdc at high altitudes you could go up to about 10 for bit better response but at sealevel keep it at 7 btdc!

Thanks a MILL so far Guys, very very helpful info!!

What would the difference (performance, torque etc etc) be at say 8 or 9 btdc instead of 7??

Bethlehem is high, and chances are slim that this 60 will ever be at the coast (not impossible though)

Or do I just stop over - complicating things and keep the btdc at 7??

    THANKS AGAIN

Personally I run my Timing at + 2 degrees for every +/- 1000 metres above sealevel but I would not go higher than 4 (except on my v8 where it is stupidly stated at 3 BTDC , run it at 12) It is difficult to say how much you gain but you will find that response on pull away and power at low revs is better, we have currently an 2F FJ45 in the shop that we have advanced to 10 degrees , makes nogal a difference. You should see a slight fuel usage improvement also.
