    Default D4D Injector problems ??

I recently came across a fellow 3L D4D owner who was very upset about the fact that his D4D's injectors gave in at 140 000 km. Repair cost was astronomical.

That got me thinking since my D4D is on 165 000 km - is this a general problem ? What service life can one expect from these injectors ?

Does 50ppm diesel vs 500 ppm make any difference ??

Too confuse the issue even more - we have a 2.5l D4D delivery van with just short of 700 000 km which is still going strongly. With it's original engine and injectors.

What is the general consensus - is this something to worry about opr just his bad luck ??

I had to replace my injectors at about 260 000km
    2.5 D4D

From what I can gather the 250 000km mark is where they normally begin to give some trouble.

Can't you just recon the injectors with new tips like you can on the kz?

    Yes, you can service them.

Injectors work hard, look at servicing them if they are getting out of spec, this you can have checked at your local dealer when servicing your vehicle and connecting it to the computer.
They do/should check the injector values at every service and advice should they be out of spec.

My mate's D4D is on 400k .... same injectors. He uses some John Deere branded injector cleaner he buys in Klerskdorp 3-4 times a year.

Use the original fuel Filters and every now and then a good quality Injector cleaner. Toyota sells a very good one. We had a case were the TOYOTA Injector cleaner brought the Injector back into specs after 1 treatment of Toyota Injector cleaner ( was 1 of our mechanics personal vehicle , took a chance although not believing in the product, he is a believer now)

be sure they scan and check values at every service, both hot and cold.

In my view (and experience), one bad tank can ruin your day - even though extra precautions might have been taken. Frequent replacement of filters will not prevent this as eg water can still pass through. (In fact some people will say one should not replace filters frequently as the efficiency of filters increase over time?)

In my case it was contaminated diesel from a 'reputable name' garage in Centurion causing enough damage to my 2006 D-4D's injectors to warrant full replacement.

IMBM but I believe a later update to the D-4D models changed injectors to more robust editions (diamond tip??), maybe from 2011 onward?

With my vehicle, I thought it would be a good idea to throw some injector cleaner thought the system.
I am assuming it was the first time it had been administered to the vehicle in 250 000km, as I bought it second hand (with about 180 000km on the clock)

    The injectors failed shortly thereafter.
My feeling is that the injector cleaner dislodged all sorts of ### which resulted in the failure.

my advice would be to possible clean your entire fuel system when replacing the injectors and thereafter add injector cleaner a few times a year.

Indeed, one of the first things I learnt, be VERY careful of what you put into your tank to "clean" your injectors.
I will not use any sort of injector cleaner ever, I believe that it can also damage your pump as it hasn't got the lubrication properties of diesel fuel.

Yesterday I had my injectors checked by Toyota during the 170k service . The result - so far so good still in spec after 170k km.

There was no additional charge for the check - so it is going be a standard request with future services.

Theo, do you know how they checked it? My D-4D Corolla is close to 300k km but the injectors are still fine according to Toyota. They do sound noisy to me though.

Is there any other way of checking injectors apart from putting it on a test bench?

Toyota do not put the injectors on a bench, they simply use a diagnostic tool to read the injector values, a 5 min job. But you also want the cold readings so ideally the vehicle must stay overnight.

Or for R400 you can buy your own OBD Techstream tool and then it is a simple 5min DIY exercise

To do a proper detail test Toyota must remove the injectors and send it to a Denso agent to put the injectors on a bench

Be careful when taking advice from Toyota dealerships/agents when it test out of specs. Say thank you and take your vehicle to diesel specialists like a Bosch diesel workshop. The first time mine tested out of specs, the agents said injectors need to be replaced. Took it to Bosch who serviced and was perfect. Few months later, engine started “dipping” and dying occasionally. Took it to agents, in another city that I was passing through. They said I need to replace injectors. Took it back to Bosch, but the “main mechanic “ was on honeymoon and the appies scratch their heads a little as they saw a dip in the pressure, but injectors were 100%. They took a chance and replaced the “pressure .. something.. valve or sensor”. Problem solved.

Here is one on Gumtree, https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-car-acce...rce=ios_social

You can however get it cheaper from ebay. Yes you need a laptop

You can also do various other settings on the vehicle with the tool.

Problem is you need a 32 bit laptop. I still don't have mine up and running a year later.

Toyota D4d Injector problems are well documented. That and the weak clutches and gearboxes.
