Yip, but I think that they just had to do what they did for the USA and European markets, the old Defenders were being banned everywhere.

Who knows, maybe they will bring out a ruggedised version later, if the demand is there.

BTW, are those basic LC's allowed into the USA and Europe, if they were that would surprise me, they don't comply with modern safety and emission standards.

No, Cruiser 70 series cant be sold in the US.
When Toyota finally replace the 70, we will have exactly the same discussion as we are having now.
It will come however someday. Sadly

Cannot help to wonder what the resale value of the new Defender would be. Will it follow the Disco's with a massive lost of value in the first 5 years.?
It is not what you buy its what you build.

I don't think that will happen initially, there will be many buyers for 3 to 4 year old New Defenders, that have spent their first few years in town, by buyers wanting to take them into the bundus.

I may be one of those buyers, the last time I looked at buying a new Defender was in 1995, and I rejected it, IMO this thing was just not suitable for long distance travel, so I got a D1 V8i instead. Kept that for 20 years.

Maybe secondhand Grips, but I dont think it passes pedestrian safety to be sold new.

ALLES is deesdae vol keyless go, kilometers drade, ens ens.

Maak net vooraf planne.

I think Suzuki got it spot on correct with the new Jimny. Was hoping that LandRover (or someone else) would follow that example with something slightly bigger.. You never know, might still happen

I think this is going to be an interesting car to buy second hand, because there are some pretty big differences between the various option packs.

So you might find that the Urban and Country have bad resale, but the Explorer and Adventure may keep their value a bit better. I also wonder how interchangeable the extras are; so can you fit the roof-rack on any of them? And the ladder and side-mounted case-thing?

You asked, so heres the list.

I know Petri and others have mentioned a few but I tried to get vehicles that could compare with it in terms of offroad usage and on road comfort.

    1. Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Overland - 914K
    2. Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Summit - 956K
    3. Toyota Prado 3.0 TX - 816K
    4. Toyota Prado 3.0 VX - 928K
    5. Toyota Prado 3.0 VX-L - 965k
    6. Toyota Prado 4.0 V6 VX - 921K
    7. Toyota Prado 4.0 V6 VX-L - 963K
    8. Toyota FJ Cruiser - 626K
    9. Toyota Land Cruiser 200 GX-R 4.5 V8 D4D -991K
    10. Toyota Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagon 4.5 V8 D4D - 724K (questionable onroad comfort)
    11. Toyota Land Cruiser 79 D/Cab 4.5 V8 D4D Standard - 707K (questionable onroad comfort)
    12. Toyota Land Cruiser 79 D/Cab 4.5 V8 D4D NAMIB - 875K
    13. Land Rover Discovery 5 S - 965K
    14. Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 DI-D 5 Door - 765K
    15. Volvo XC90 T5 R Design AWD - 924K
    16. Volvo XC90 D5 R Design AWD - 969K

All pricing as per "New Car Deals" website as of today. Some of the Toyota deals can be bettered if you shop around.

A new Defender 110 base model will start at 930K, and if you spec it up to the equivalent of an SE model then it will cost around 1.1 to 1.5 million

I say again, excessive pricing. There are 4 or 5 in my 16 above that are at least equal to the new Defender in tech and off road capabilities.

I like the new Defender, but JLR are pricing their latest offering out of the market. I would be surprised if they sell an average of 3000 units per month globally for their first 2 years of sales.

    Time will tell I suppose.

Spoke to a Land Rover sales manager, they anticipate the Defender to start at the R850k mark for the base 110 and up to R1.4mil for a fully kitted out 110 first edition.

    2) Wants a "softer" 4x4, but with the pukka looks and capability

    3) Wants something modern and funky, not something like a Prado, something more "updated" with all the mod cons

    4) Wants an outright overlander that he can kit to his taste, maybe also tow an offroad caravan with (that's us in here, mostly)

................So, looking at this, the new 110 actually has a MUCH bigger Market than the outgoing Defender.

Maybe also a younger Buyer?? The older Defender Buyer will already have moved on to something else like a 76 or GW or 200 or Prado??

I want a new one, but that doesn't mean I will replace my current 2006 110 DC with it. My plan is to replace the wife's platkar with a 2022 one in around 2024/2025.

Then I have the best of both worlds - the old one for the really rough overlanding trips a bit closer to home (think Van Zyl's Pass or really bad roads like the one to Sossusvlei, etc) and the new one for the tamer stuff such as Etosha / Kruger / Botswana, etc.

The new one can then also be a Kerk en Werk kar for the wife and can do the school run
