A mechanic that knows his stuff on a Nissan 1400 is like hen's teeth & to find one that knows his stuff and has the correct diagnostic equipment is even more rare . For parts try Goldwagen or good old Midas![]()

Hi all, new guy here so please take it easy.
I have had my 1400 bakkie for 2 and a half years now. first year no problems, last 18 months constant problems. (only 3 months after I put it on a dyno, it is cutting out, struggling to start, fuel consumption increases)
Where can I buy quality parts for my 1400? Distributor, carburetor, fuel pump, etc. I also heard Nissan is not making any more carburetors for the 1400 specifically, any truth in this?
If someone could please have a look and pinpoint the problems on the bakkie for me, make your price.
Best regards

When faced with the dilemma of being right or being happy , I choose happy every time
Really?
The first motor I rebuilt was a Nissan 1400, I was 16 years old. I don't imagine the 'technology' used in those engines has changed.
When I finally got my license, I commandeered daddies bakkie. Me and my tjommies would disappear with it for days on end. Loved it, and miss it.

Please come on! A Nissan 1400 must be the simplest of vehicles to work on! The carburettors are known to be rubbish. Fit a Golf carb if possible. If not, it is still esay to work on, there is not a lot that can go wrong. Check jets are clean, float level correct, gaskets not leaking, choke functioning and anti run on solenoid functioning. That's about it.
Distributor check for shaft sideways play, change and set points and condenser and set timing. Maybe replace cap. And coil if really needed. Check valve clearances. That should sort you out.
If you don't find someone to do it, contact Henris here on the Forum. He will know what to do.

I'll never forget the day I saw a Nissan 1400 barrelling down Old Main Road in Pinetown, only it didn't have a 1400 motor in it. It had what sounded like a 305 Chevy. The air filter was sticking through the bonnet.

Carb is a standard single choke Nikki if I recall.
See if you can get an adapter to fit a VW Citi Golf carb.
Fuel pump: any generic electric pump will work. Midas or Autozone.
Why did it go on a Dyno? WHAT DID YOU MODIFY?
As mentioned, the A-series engines are probably the easiest things to work on, and are in fact a design the Japs stole from Leyland or British Motor Corporation.
A beginner mechanic should sort that out in half a day.

Are we sure it has an actual 1400 engine in it, and not a 305 Chevy conversion like the one I saw?
So was mine
1400 specialist? I'm sorry, the OP walked right into that one. But please don't get scared off. You will (hopefully) soon grow a thick skin and will then end up spending way too much time in here enjoying what is in fact a whole lot of wholesome good natured fun, most of the time.

The sound of a 1400's doors slamming is more cringeworthy than Frau Farbissina's screams. Fun to drive on short distances though, especially with the later chunky steering wheels.
