I'm about to do this. EGR has a very slow coolant leak. I've been quoted just under R10k for the whole job.

Sorry CATS, I did not see this until now ....
The cooler cost me R1400 at Goldwagen, the software guy R2400, and labour R2500. Had it done at an ex VW Indy, who's actually my neighbour.
This labour included the whole new cambelt, and pulley also though....
The whole bumper/grill area gets removed, but if you know how, it's very easy - or so he says.
Hope this reply isn't too late.

Hi All.
I'm new to the forum. From Australia.
You have lots of very useful info here regarding the T5 transporter..thankyou to all contributors.
I have 2 myself.
A 2005 2.5 AXE transporter 4motion lwb with 500000km on it!
It is such a good vehicle. Very simple EGR and no DPF. The engine burns maybe 1l of oil in the 15000km that I service it. It has never been apart. Have replaced minor items like the front driveshafts but it has been very reliable. Just have the gearbox out now however as one of the bearings in it collapsed. I often tow heavy loads with it so not surprising. I am going to rebuild it and replace the clutch and DMF.
I also purchased a 2012 highline CFAC bitubro multivan with 100000km. Lovely vehicle but the engine is ruined from water ingestion. I believe that the engine damage was actually done before hand all from the faulty EGR. It recently had the new EGR with the D suffex but already the damage was done as the intake and exhaust were very gummed up with soot..we are talking maybe 6mm all through the intake!
On the receipt for the EGR is stated that the car was using excessive amounts of oil. All that oil it was burning getting recirculated through an already damaged motor must have made it a real pig for the previous owners and also why the intake was so clogged after only 5000km on the new EGR.
Anyway..I plan to rebuild the CFAC shortly. Hopefully it just requires a rebore and new pistons and the head recond.I will do the work myself.
Does anyone know if the single turbo block and internals..the CAAC engine I believe from the T5.. are the same as the CFAC?
I want to completely remove the EGR and the DPF. That's what bought me to this site. I couldn't find any info anywhere regarding the complete removal of the EGR. Just blanking..which I will obviously have to to do on the head and the intake.
I looked at the part recommend here off the Amarok that is the oil filter/cooler unit. I cannot find that part anywhere that has the angled outlet on the cooler. All of the oil coolers, even when I looked on Goldwagens website using the part number given.. seem to just have a flat surface without the outlet tube.
Can anyone shed some light on this please? Is that outlet tube required? Does it have to be installed to the unit? I can see 4 dimples in the design that could be where an outlet goes but I cannot find one of those units anywhere with the outlet?
It looks like that unit is used in many VW and Audi vehicles.
There is a a local tuner that is very good programming vag that can program out the EGR and DPF for me, I have already asked him.
Any input is appreciated
Hoodee
I am at the point to do this same conversion on mine but I also have the same worry as Hoodee in the previous post.
When I look at pictures on the net and from Goldwagen the 03L 115 389 C fitting comes with a cooler that does not have an outlet pipe as per the pic posted by Koos.
Is this the right thing or did you swap out the oil cooler part from the old fitting onto the new fitting?
Help Koos??

Hello Cats, mine looks like the Goldwagen pic, installed in the engine the oil fliter points upward, and a coolant hose is connected on the plastic section, that you see on the same pic.
I assume the oil port, (and other coolant port) is on the engine - but I did not inspect the part carefully enough before installation, to know this for sure.

Evening gents.
This thread brought me much comfort when looking at buying my transporter. If it ever misbehaved I'd just blank the EGR off and map it out.
Well that day has come, VW has quoted R40k for a new EGR.
When chatting to my most trusted private mechanic he recommended not blanking it off because it forms a very important function in that it makes the engine run cooler because there is less oxygen getting combusted.
Have you guys noticed your engines running hotter than the 110⁰C max I've noticed on mine?
R40k is a hard pill to swallow but this mechanic has proved himself emphatically to me in ethic, workmanship and advice in the past.
Shameless plug for those in the Kzn midlands, you can PM for his details.

My bus does not have a temperature meter being the poverty pack Transporter but I have an OBDII port reader connected to my phone by bluetooth to read the engine temps using the engine sensors, especially used when towing long uphills. I have not noticed any increase in engine temp after removing the EGR cooler measured to before removing it. The max I get while towing on long uphill is about 107degC which to me is already high, but even at that temp I get no warning lights or anything on the dash. The engine seem to be designed to run pretty hot for efficiency. As long as the coolant mix is good and the pressure in the cooling system is not compromised by leaking seals it should easily handle up to 120degC I would think. My normal temp is between 87 and 94 depending on outside temp when not towing on flat road with no wind.
Unfortunately I cannot measure Exhaust Gas Temp but as the the EGR valve in any way close on wide open throttle, like when you are chugging along on an uphill giving the same effect as a blocked off EGR, I do not think it would make any material difference.
BUT. I am no white coat VW technician so whatever I post here is just internet say so gained from my particular experience. So it is definitely not gospel so use it at own risk. I am also but experimenting and learning as I go along.

Out of interest sake, was this design changed in the T6 or will it have the same EGR issues?
According to the Facebook group 'T5.1/T6 Excessive oil use for CFCA engine" the problem also happens on some T6 models where the CFCA engine is fitted.
My T5.1 now on 130000kms and no problem so far before or after the EGR removal. One thing I can add is that if you have it removed make sure they also program out the EGR valve as mine was not and now throw Engine code every time I go down to the coast from up here in the Highveld. No performance issue and I just quickly clear it with my phone app and OBDII dongle, but can be a hassle if you go down/or up in altitude a lot.

The problem , still exist in the cfca engines , is just a bad design which VW struggle with to maintain euro 6 emissions regulations
As mentioned before the firewall of the T5 or T6 prevents them from fitting it like the other lower spec engines
For this reason they discontinued it in the T6.1
According to the internet the 103 kw engine CAAC is the better option, more of an industrial workhorse than a performance engine.
I must say I dont feel that this engine lack any horsepower, although it has 40 hp less, it definately uses much less hay for that 40 horses.
If you have a 132 kw bitdi, go and change the egr , and delete asap, and you’ll have a much better engine.
Just to mention the Amaroks dont have this problem because they have a different egr setup.

Thanks to Koos, my EGR delete is now complete!
No more limp mode, no more engine light, but more power!
Still haven't gotten my head around the cooler part from Gold wagen yet. Concerned about aluminum ripping through my engine.
How do you guys measure oil temp? I can only measure water temp on mine? I would dearly like to keep an eye on oil and DSG gear box temp as well if possible.

I've got the T6.
Can't see the DSG temperature, only the engine oil temperature.
Ek het so ruk trug gevra oor my t6 se tempratuur 114 was en vir my is dit baie hoog , hulle op invoice van daai diens gesit
"Sent Technical query and was advised that it can run up to 150 degrees Celsius and would still be normal " . Dit is vir my heeltemal te hoog .
