Default Jeep XJ power steering box rebuilt kit

    Hi all,

Has anyone needed to rebuilt their own power steering box before? Mine is leaking and might have someone that will recon the whole unit for about R6-7k but if I can try do it myself ,and in the process save some cash, then I want to try.

I see rebuild kits in the US but don't want to attempt importing something again soon.

Anyone know where I can get hold of local alternatives.

Maybe first try seal treatment for steering racks, Liqui Moly sells a decent one. It slightly swells the rubber seals and often results in a permanent fix, worth a shot before pulling it all out.

Going to get the kit as well do that I have it but this is a great idea for now. Sometimes I worry about additives but on the XJ I am happy to try things.

I have heard from a few people that steering system seal treatment works well, it's so easy to try it's worth a shot.

That Liqui Moly does seem quite pricey though especially if your steering system has more than a liter or 2 of fluid, maybe someone has a cheaper alternative, then again Liqui Moly makes good stuff so maybe worth the cost.

I went to a couple of places today and phoned around. No one seems to stock this product.

Just back to the OP, the XJ steering box is a standard Saginaw steering box as used on my CJ and just about anything American for the last 2 000 years.. They are dead easy to work on, I purchased my seal kit from West Texas Offroad, contact Matt Hodges at [email protected].

In 2010 the kit cost US$35 for seals, or US$45 for seals & bearings plus shipping with USPS of $15,95

In 2016 the kit still cost US$35 for seals, or US$45 for seals & bearings but shipping with USPS increased to US$35,95...!!

Anyway, its not a difficult repair, like a chop I managed to damage the very last seal on the sector shaft, which being Imperial and high pressure could not be found locally at the time, Bearingman made me two really odd looking seals which I had my doubts would work, however its almost 10 years later and no sign of any leaks yet... still have the one spare for that "just in case" moment..

    Good luck..
Every dog has its day, and those with broken tails have their weak-ends...

    1976 CJ-7, 400CI + Holley EFI, Tera-Low 3,15:1 twin stick, ARB's front & rear, oil leaks & plenty more....

All my other petrol burners are boring....

I'd give Liqui Moly a call, they do have it listed on their Sa website and another forum member mentioned using it successfully so assumed he bought it locally.

If I recall correctly Takealot may also stock it.
