Default roof top tent hoist build bearing help.

bought a hardshell rtt and busy disigning a pulley sistem

i have a cable handwinch fitted to the afdak pole but need 7 small pulleys for the lifting, these pulleys will be attached to the roof supports and rtt

i can make the pulleys and keep it as small as possible and thinking of useing 15x 35 bearings ,but my concern is the load it can handle when lifting, any engineers that help ,

7 bearing spreaded on the load, will it handle the 100kg max . when in position it will be tied with 2 heavy duty ratchet straps .

I'm not an engineer, can't help with bearing load.

I bought some sliding gate wheels ( https://www.caslad.co.za/product/gat...wheelscastors/) and use them. It works for me, also use a cable hand winch

gate wheels ,damn ,never gave it a thought ,thanks .

Does it really need bearings if its only 70 kg.? Will follow this closely.I have a similer need but was thinking of just using delrin plastic to make the pulleys and just on shafts not bearings.

think a bag of cement plus half of it ,the shaft that turns in the nylon , it will be in no time a goner ,the fredlin hoist is a no no i can make things for myself ,

I agree, it's easy, all the safety and design work is done, and you're supporting a small business. I've ordered mine for next month

I f you take a skiboat trailer for example .That must be 500kg easily and it lasts forever. If the tent is distributed over a couple of pulleys I would think it would reduce the weight on the individual pulleys .I just mentioned delrin cause its relatively self lubing ,cheaper than vesconite and a dream to machine as well as being unable to rust.

one of the guys in our workshop allso mentioned this ,but it will take up to much space ,the nylon will go first ,has seen this many times ,depends how much it is used ,and the wear will leave a dent in it and when you want to winch it it won't turn ,but i will agree with you turning nylon is fun made a vidio of it just fly's of the cutting tool ,nice to see.,the fredlin hoist ,it will be no lie i was drooling about it .

Sliding gate wheels have a recess that will pinch the rope, rather use garage door pulleys. I have done this with a 500kg handwinch, works like a charm I just have to fine tune the lifting harness.

The pulleys in my pic has done duty for almost 21years now, doors open/closed every day, there is no problem with them, other parts replaced yes but not those pulleys. How many times per month/week/day will the rtt mechanism be used? I think these pulleys will last. The size yes it might be a problem at 7cm diameter so smaller ones are in order.

I made my own pulleys out of delrin plastic because nylon absorbs water and on close tolerances I was worried it might bind up on the stainless shaft I used. My pulleys I guess are only about 40mm.I wanted to use small pulleys because i had space problems.

Its also a dream to machine plastic. My pulley system is used on a kayak of about 35kg.I just use my arms to pull it up because of the multiplication of the pulley system. Very easy. Being in Durban rust is a problem. I use 8mm nylon rope.

Ten mm nylon rope is rated at over 1400kg. Hard to believe. This is an example of a delrin pulley.

Those gate wheels are unbelievably cheap.
That friedland hoist looks interesting. Maybe I will try to make one. I like the challange of making the worm and wheel.I reckon I could make it for MORE than five times the cost of a new one.I have a very low tech solution for my canopy.

Some thing to consider is to make the hoist/lift part be driven by a cordless drill, maybe weld a Hex bit onto the drive shaft or similar. Then you'll have effortless lifting and dropping of whatever is on the hoist, quick and easy.
