    Default Bush Lapa general discussions

Thought I'd create a seperate thread for general discussions to keep the topic specific threads clean for easier reference.

    Hi all

OK I am Planning a Trip for April 2020.

We would like to do the following. Any assistance would be appreciated.

proposed itinerary is - Bloemfontein - Upinton

    3 nights Tweerivieren
    3 nights Mata mata
    2 nights Nosob
    2 night Tweerivieren

Where to book. and what is needed.
This would be our first trip up that side of the world. So anyone that has Suggestion and recommendations would be great.
Should I add additional stop overs??

    Would I need a 4x4 or just a 2 x 4 with difflock?? Towing a BL - Kewer

    Regards

    Dave

Personally I will add a night at Nossob and only one night at TR on the way out.

Book through Sanparks, but you might already struggle with space for April.

No need for 4x4 but you will need to deflate tyres of both vehicle and caravan to at least 1,5 bar.

    Agree with above statements.

You can also use the following number for your bookings, it is a Sanparks satellite office who gives you exceptional good service. ( +27 (21) 886-8342 ).

Good luck for April next year. Think it is a bit late already but you never know.

If you interested in going during May, please send me a PM. I may, just maybe have a booking I am not going to use!

    Good luck.

April is fully booked. For Nossob camping there was some open spots the last week in Feb, but otherwise you won't find space until probably end July.

Anyway, your intended route seems fine, but in my opinion Mata Mata is not worth 3 nights (max 2 to have a full day exploring) and at least 3 at Nossob - a day trip to Unions end is a must. I'd do 2 nights TR also as there's some nice routes to take from there.

    A 4x2 should be fine.

I agree, TR is just a night on the way in or out. Mata Mata and Nossob is where you want to be. Personally I think Mata Mata may be just as good as Nossob if not better. Camping is next to the fence whereas with Nossob you're in the middle of the camp.

If you can find space, try a night or two at Rooiputs. That is hands down our absolute favourite camp. Book through Botswana Wildlife and National Parks.

    Hi Folks

What is the general consensus re the best navigation software?

It seems that a Garmin Montana GPS with Tracks4A is high on the list. Routes can be planned via Basecamp on your PC and then transferred. This all flies in the face of what has has happened in the sailing industry where there has been a move away from chartplotters/Garmin type GPS and programs like Navionics are downloaded for use on iPhones or Android machines

The problem is that the Tracks4A app for mobile has terrible reviews?

I tried Maps.me in the Richtersveld over the last couple of weeks and it was pretty poor.

Would love to know what other Bushlapians have opted for

    On another point

Has anyone given any thought to how best to approach a flat tyre while driving through a twisty steep mountain pass like Akkedis or Helskloof pass in the Richtersveld?

We have just driven those passes and I would not want to have to change a tyre on either the trailer or the towing vehicle in those circumstances.

Any thoughts from the more experienced out there?

T4A is indeed tops for remote travelling.

On wheel changing - it can be tricky, but I'd try drive on to a level spot with some space to work.

I suppose it all depends on what type of mishap you have, sidewall damage will necessitate a swap with your spare, which may pose a challenge and you will be well advised to ensure your vehicle and van is secured before you start lifting a wheel. Chocks or rocks behind all other wheels for instance.

Back in 2001 touring Nam I had a fairly well used set of Bridgestone dueler “gemors” on my vehicle and had 5 punctures, all in the tread areas.

I did not remove any tyre. Once I discovered the flat due to vehicle handling/behavior I would stop and investigate. I adopted the below procedure:

    1. Immediately get the compressor on the punctured tyre
    2. Using HLJ lift the wheel off the ground
    3. Rotate tyre to expose puncture
    4. Plug the hole and wait 20 min, whilst SWAMBO organise something cold, was January and hectic hot
    5. In the meantime pump the tyre to required pressure
    6. Lower the vehicle and put away the HLJ
    7. Cut the exposed bit of the plug off and recheck tyre pressure
    8. Off you go again

I have changed tyre brands and never had a puncture again on any trip.

Last few years yes when the KO2's and now KM3's arrived. Previously I used Cooper ST Maxx. The ST Maxx was a great tyre, as long as you rotate them regularly. I once on my 105 Cruiser missed a 10Kkm rotation and they developed a horrible noise and you could see the knoblies were run off at an angle. Driving slowly was like driving on a corrugated dirt road.

As for Bridgstone Duelers, never ever in my life. Hopefully they have drastically improved the tyre since 2001.
