Default Side-striped jackal in Free State?

    Good day everyone,

I was staying at Sterkfontein Dam this week, while driving on the dirt road in the reserve part the one morning I saw a Jackal. Now I have seen a lot of Black-backed Jackals over the years, but this one was slightly different, seemed a bit bigger and was browner (and no red) all over with a whitish side stripe.

Unfortunately it was way to quick to even attempt a picture.

Now the coverage maps shows it hasn't really been seen much further east than just outside Swaziland.

So has anyone else seen similar or was it somehow just a dark pelt Black-backed Jackal?

If it looked like the one in the picture, then it's a Aardwolf.

    They eat termites.

Sorry, I jumped to a conclusion and apparently I'm totally wrong.

No worries, and no, definitely not a Aardwolf, definitely a jackal but not like one I have seen in the highveld in my 40 years. I did see a Side-stripped Jackal (aka Witkwasjakkals) once in Northern Kruger in my late teens, but that was now decades ago.

Luckily it's a nature reserve and I saw:

Eland, red hartebeest, zebras, springbuck, what I assume is mountain reedbuck, ostriches, baboons and a secretarybird.

I didn't think to look at the tail in the 8 second it was visible , it was 9:00 and cloudless, so lighting was good. It was brownish all over with a white strip on the side, the only reason I didn't go "oh look, that's a Black-backed Jackal" and leave it at that and actually dug deeper. I'll probably never know what it was.

They used to occur in the Free State saw one about 40 years ago on the farms near Ficksburg. Definitely a side striped jackal. I think the afrikaans name was a Silvervos.
Fat Eared Boxes were also quite common then.

Nee!! Silwervos is the Cape fox, side striped jackal is a purely tropical or hot subtropical species. Edit: witkwasjakkals is Afrikaans for side striped jackal.

Then it probably was a Cape Fox. It was not the Black Backed Jackal as it would have come to a sticky end for eating sheep. The memory banks are not as good as they used to be.

The Side-Striped Jackal is found in Northern Namibia,
reported in Lydenburg & Belfast etc & found in Kruger Park & Swaziland
and it seems to be indicated in the reserve areas (umfolozi, hluhluwe, St Lucia etc) only some 350km or so to the East of the the well vegetated Sterkfontein Dam area.
The Side Striped Jackal distribution area is also noted to be increasingly trending/extending westerly.

So yes, it is not impossible, that
the Side Striped Jackal may be
present in the Sterkfontein Dam area, just N of Lesotho in the E. Freestate.

    Unfortunately true.

I have a hard time to believe that farmers in general, are nature lovers.

Some of us were very nature orientated. We stopped all pesticides and herbicides in the last 25 years. IE. No poisons of any form allowed or used whatsoever.
Sheep were put in the kraal every night.
    Cattle had full time herders.
    Wetlands not utilised but conserved.

Soon the results showed themselves. Guinea Fowl came back. Small mammals made their appearance. Kudu and trek bokke also arrived. A lone Wildebeest called Willy made a home for himself.
Ant bears also made themselves known.
All it takes is a bit of awareness and hard work.

Sadly the farms were sold due to our wonderful government. And it has all gone for a ball of sh*t again..
