    AMR 4897 engine immobilizer coil.

Steering column goes through it. Without it your Defender wont start, unless the immobilizer has been disconnected.

This coil picks up the remote. If it can't, car won't start.

Thanks. That's worrying. Never removed the steering. Would that mean it was just tucked inside the dashboard.

I wasn't aware that it had an immobilizer. If I try to start the car while leaving the coil hanging could I end up having a problem where I would need codes reset or is it a case of it will either start or it won't.

Remove the remote from the key and place it in the house.

Try to start the Landy. This will give indication if it's still working.
