    Default Buzzard Mountain Retreat

Buzzard Mountain Retreat is in the Soutpansberg about 20km outside of Louis Trichardt on the R522. The rustic campsite is almost three quarters up the mountain and the Eco camping site is right on top of the mountain.

The campsite, with a small boma, is large with plenty of choices of where to camp, there is no demarcated sites since you will be the only one there. (One party at any given time)

The road up the mountain to the campsite should only be tried in a 4x4 with low range and descent ground clearance. Its slow going and takes about one hour. Offroad trailers have been up there but not any Offroad caravans, but its doable with the right vehicle/caravan combo.

There is a cosy boma with a rock table and fire pit. Wood can be bought and will be drop at the campsite.

Ablutions is rustic and consists of male/female, each with three showers and a long drop toilet. Hot water is supplied via a donkey system. Although its rustic the water quality and pressure is for example better than what one experience at Tzendze.

There are two stone cottages, one at the bottom and one 300m from the campsite, for those who prefer it to camping.

The Fauna and Flora on the farm is amazing with great bird viewing.

a 1.5km trip takes you to the top of the mountain. This is a grade 3 trail. Take it slow, pick the right lines and you will be ok. You will need low range.

On top of the mountain the views are spectacular. There are stone tables and chairs at the lookout posts where one can relax and enjoy nature.

Camping on top of the mountain is Eco camping, there is no facilities, you take everything in and everything out.

The retreat is run by an elderly couple, John and Gail Greaves, both in their 70s. John has lived on the farm his whole life.

    Rates are as follows:
    R25-00 entry/conservation fee. (Once off)
    R150-00 pppn camping
    R25-00 per crate of wood

    Thanks, looks great.
Lusted for a Landy but the Pajero was sexier and bigger in the right departments, just like my Missus.

This remains one of our all-time favourites. There are actually two stone cottages on the mountain closer to the campsite in addition to the more luxurious cottage at the bottom. There are even pockets of Afromontane forest at the top and unusual animals like samango monkey, red duiker and crested guineafowl are present. Narina trogon and gorgeous bush shrike thrive here! At the very top the vegetation is a stunning grassland/fynbos mosaic and all branches are festooned with old man's beard lichen. The views are just so much more rewarding during the rainy season (summer) but any time is a good time to go; winter nights aren't freezing due to the latitude and summer days aren't scorching due to the altitude. It is often misty at the top but this just adds to the ambiance. Glad to see John and Gail are still doing this!
