Default Cold & Flue this winter

Is it just me, or are colds and flue out of control this winter. Usually Iíll get a cold once every winter. This year itís been a new one every three weeks.

My diet and general health has remained the same.

Have heard a few other people say the same thing. I did not do a glue vaccination this year, have had the previous few years.

I have not had a common cold in the last two years (winters) aside from a bit of tonsil inflammation earlier this winter that required some antibiotics. I work in an office environment with lots of other people so touching doors and computers and documents is inevitable so catching something from someone else is a real threat.

Drink alcohol - it kills germs you know

I have never ever had that flu shot people talk about - I dont believe in it, and so far I basically have never really had what is known as the "flu" - common cold yes, bronchitis sure, runny stomach yeah but never flu.

I don't generally get flu. The sniffles now and then but that's generally it.

My wife and kids on the other hand....

Couple of years ago we decided to get the flu shot.

Never been so sick in my life! Never again!

This year I have had a light bout of flu - sniffles & sinus. I'm usually "bad" for a day then it clears up.

But this time had it for nearly a week! So it does seem to be worse.

Well I am firmly on the side of the shots.

Started around 15 years ago, and of course I got the flu with the first one, well you would wouldn't you if they shot you full of flu. I understand the process though and stuck with it and never get even a common cold.

The "shot" is a variant of the flu strain, they mutate all the time so they change from year to year. Your body is the best coding machine in the world, once it has seen a strain, it codes your antibodies to destroy it. It then remembers the code it used and when it sees it again send the antibodies to go get the little buggers. Vaccines introduce different strains in a "lite" version for which your body also responds. Now your body has a whole room of collected codes.

Your body now knows when a full blooded attack comes along which army, navy or air force to send to see off the attackers.

I normally get sick twice a year, but this year I've been flue free thus far (touch wood)
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.

That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

That's not entirely correct the flu vaccine is actually a set (usually 3-5 ) of inert proteins that simulate the most common recent flu viruses, it is not actually the virus itself. This is what the antibodies react to and set up the defenses to fight it, the fact that you got the flu with the first one is most likely because that particular virus was not part of the "set" and you did not have the antibodies to fight it. The interesting thing is that regular flu shots mean that your body is developing a collection of antibodies and it is therefore more likely to have the right antibody present when the time comes.
