    Default First real camping trip. Advice needed.

    Hi everyone.

    We are doing a trip up to Namibia from 27 Sep to 9 Oct.

    Day 1: Delmas => Augrabies
    Day 2: Augrabies => Ais Ais
    Day 3: Ais Ais
    Day 4: Ais Ais => Mount D'urban
    Day 5: Mount D'urban => Sesriem Oshana
    Day 6: Sesriem Oshana => Swakop (Windpomp 14)
    Day 7: Swakop (Windpomp 14)
    Day 8: Swakop (Windpomp 14) => Windhoek
    Day 9: Windhoek => Kang (Bots)
    Day 10: Kang => SA

    Overall how is this trip looking?

    We are 4 people driving a 4x4 Fortuner.
    We will stop at the nearest towns to buy food and will take a lot of canned food with us.

    For a tent me and my wife are borrowing a Campmaster Dome Tent 405. Will this be sufficient? Or should we rather buy an "Overnight" tent like the Malamoo?

    At the moment we don't have mattresses yet so we are looking at 3 options:
    Tentco Swag
    Carma Quip
    Tento Single Roll up

    I'm about 1.86m (97kg). Which one of these would you guys suggest. We will be sleeping on the floor. No stretchers?

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Considering you are getting a free tent to use, then go for it.

    Mattress you can't go wrong investing in a CarmaQuip. Id get a large for you and a medium for Swambo.

    Do you have a decent cooler, or perhaps one you can borrow?

    Four people in a Tuna and camping.

    Will you be towing? Matrasses takes up a lot of space. Then there is the tents, sleeping bags, cooler/fridge, camp kettle/pots etc etc

    Exactly what I was thinking - the other 2 people, kids or adults?

    The carmaquip mattresses are great (yes good for you but it rolls up big). I see they now also have a hiking version out which from pictures appears to be smaller but I don't know how good.

    I know First Ascent also have good but thinner mattresses but it also rolls up smaller, like a rolled-up broad sleeping bag size.

    Iím with Petri, in those dry environments, get a stretcher and sleep under the stars.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    I'm not sure where we will be able to get stretchers and I would rather buy something we will re-use a few times.

    We are 4 adults. They have their own tent.

    Sadly we don't have a trailer as hiring one is way too expensive.

    We will be able to get a decent cooler (not electrical). We will try to buy food for each day and keep it in the cooler.

    Those mattresses look nice. They do look a bit big though, but I heard the Carmaquip is also pretty big.

    You would not be able to get a roof rack somewhere?

    Space will be a big issue. And with such a situation you have to almost unpack everything to reach something else.

    I would start by trying to "get" more space for packing. As mentioned before, you will need it, 4 adults plus tents, coolers, food, bedding, clothing, pots, pans, and, and, and... You will need it.

    Get a Romer cooler, often on sale 9n Takealot and there's a factory direct ad on Gumtree that sells at similar prices.

    Regarding the space for 4 adults + luggage, maybe pack as if you are going hiking, only the essentials.

    That is what we're going for. We also tried to get places with all the facilities we need.

    You say that hiring a trailer is too expensive, but I think that a trailer in your case at least would be essential to avoid some of the problems mentioned above.
    Buy a cheapie from Makro or wherever - one of those mild steel things or maybe a second hand one.
    Use it for you trip and then sell as "hardly used":
    If that is true!!
    It will probably cost you less depending on length of trip.
    Initial capital outlay (Not that much) but largely recoverable.

    Of course I am assuming no very rough or off road conditions.

    We have done a 4 adult 2 tent one vehicle trip to Namibia, but we had a double cab and a roofrack. Pack lightly and limit the size of suitcases etc, soft shell dufflebag each. But I see you are still young, you will make it and have fun and have great memories and hopefully many more return visits.

    Perhaps a stretcher and tent in one, depending on space, the Oztrail stretcher tent
