Default "best" Suspension upgrade for FJ for Corrugated Roads

    Good day all

What shocks and suspension should be considered when upgrading the stock FJ?
Would SHOCK and SUSPENSION be required, or just the SHOCKS?
I found some info on this thread:
    https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...ension-upgrade
    and
    https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...Cruiser-Shocks

The main purpose of the upgrade will be for performance with dirt road handling that is corrugated.
    I've seen mentions of:
    • Bilsteins' (that's only shock though)
    • EFS (not sure what is stands for)
    • Tough Dog
    • Mikem

    What combo would one advise?

    Follow up question:
Looking at a 2012 FJ with 130 000km on the clock. Or should one rather look at something newer? This would be a secondary vehicle.

Hi, couple of years ago I bought a 2012 FJ Cruiser with 112k km on, no problems. The later 2013 models have got an additional fuel tank and come with crawl control. But neither the age nor the mileage of the one you are looking at would be anything to worry about. Just check the service history.

As to the suspension: you will get many different answers. I eventually put in an Old Man Emu suspension, shocks & springs. Compared to the OEM suspension, that will give you a 2" or 50 mm lift. It transforms the FJ's gravel handling significantly, it's a lot better now.
Compare prices and have a look at MikeM as well. You can upgrade the shocks and leave the original springs in, but don't upgrade the springs and use the original shocks!
When you do decide for an aftermarket suspension, do make sure you get the springs with the right load rating for you. E.g. if you plan on fitting other accessories, like aftermarket front bumper, rear bumper and carry a constant load, choose the medium to heavy load suspension. Otherwise, if you don't plan on fitting heavy items, go for the light load suspension. It's more comfortable than the other ones when the vehicle is empty or only carries a load occasionally.

    Enjoy the FJ!

I researched this a bit a while back and agree with HN "do make sure you get the springs with the right load rating for you." I have driven two FJ's with heavy duty components and it really cocks up the unladen ride - downright horrible. The standard setup is pretty good with normal loads/driving but a well set up mod will do wonders for offroad driving at speed and obviously the same for heavy loads and heavy duty.

Hi Magnus thank you for starting this discusion.
I have Old Man Emu and it works perfect for me. I have a roofrack and longrange tank with 4x jerry cans and tow a echo 3 trailer and this suspention handle it very well.
Tyres is 285/70 R17 STT Pro and i love my FJ as it is but never tried other suspentions. Will go the OME way again for sure
