Default Wideband Reciever needed - URGENT

Hi guys, hoping someone here can help or point me in the direction of someone who can.

i desperately need to get a wideband reciever, specifically one capable of receiving CW and USB transmissions in the 148 to 152 MHz band.

Something like the ICOM IC-R10 or Alinco DJ11x.

I bought a wideband scanner off amazon hoping it would work, but it only receives AM and FM transmissions. I donít have time now to wait for another Amazon delivery and need to find one local. A good secondhand unit will also suffice.

Anyone able to help out or point me in the right direction?

Spoke to Sams again, they can help with a different unit, but it will do the job.... but itís a whole lot more expensive than expected. Was hoping for a slightly cheaper option.

Hoping someone one here has something available, otherwise I will have to hoes R9K tomorrow

Get a hold of 3G Telecom in Garsfontein - they are across from the Glenstantia library.

Thanks for this, unfortunately the R6 does FM and AM only, not SSB and CW. I specifically need something that handles CW modulation

I don't know of anything in CW or SSB using those frequencies, which are intended for VHF FM or Digital radios only.

As a HAM (ZS5KAD) I too am rather curious of the CW and SSB requirement in that frequency range.

Many HAM transceivers like Yeasu 817 857 897 will however do what you want to do, but it would be illegal and you would need somebody to sell you one illegally.

I donít need a transceiver, but rather a receiver only.

It is to be used for wildlife tracking using radio Telemetry. If you look at the ICASA spectrum allocation, 148-152Mhz is actually allocated for this purpose. Nothing illegal going on here

You sure that is CW/SSB, and not FM? It might also be a very narrow-band channel but I still find it strange that it falls smack-bang in the middle of an already crowded Commercial FM band.

Just checked my rig, and it's only for the ham bands - Yeasu FT-221R. Will pm you the number of someone who is also involved in tracking - he might be able to help

Thanks guys, I have gone for a AOR AR8200. A but pricier than I was expecting to pay, but still cheaper than the local suppliers of wildlife tracking equipment charge for a much simpler unit.

I wish it it was FM, in which case a cheap as chips Boafeng handheld would work. The VHF tracking units are usually either SSB (USB), or CW. Space for batteries is very limited when building transistors attached to animals, so you need a very energy efficient way of transmitting a continuous beep (usually at 60BPM) on a unit expected to last up to 4 years minimum. This apparently canít realistically be achieved with FM, especially if you need to transmit over significant distances.

FYI - this link is to a scanner that is available through a local supplier, but costs close on R27k

    https://www.telonics.com/products/vhfReceivers/tr-5.php

they sell the cheaper, very very basic TR4 unit for R16k, and it doesn’t have half the functions of most decent handheld wideband receivers.

The article however confirms that it is CW modulated signals.
