Default FJ Cruiser or Amarok V6?

    Hi All

Any idea which one would be a better bet to take?
    History:
My dad currently has a Q5, 3 liter diesel - lovely machine
He used to be a farmer and is retired, his favourite vehicle was his 110 Defender TD5 back in the day.

he can't decide between the Amarok V6 4Motion (I've got the 2liter so he enjoys the drive of the bakkie) and his other choice is a FJ Cruiser...Which he finds beautiful.

His goal is to do 4x4ing with 'tours' or other people around his vicinity.
Maybe work in a tour or so to a neighboring country
    Space for his 2 Bullterriers

Why would one go for one over the another?
    Any inputs would be appreciated?

Personally, I think the FJ is a good fit for him as I think that covers his bases. But i've never driven one before.

    Cheers

Both are brilliant. FJ will be more 4x4 orientated (low range, higher ground clearance etc) than Amarok.
Amarok more suited to tours (packing space etc)

Amarok will also be lighter on fuel and thus more range

Really depends if he wants a big bakkie or a medium (in terms of length) SUV?

Love my FJ but if space is an issue he should look at the VW

Has your dad driven a FJ before? It is not for everyone, the doors is off-putting to many, it is fairly small, but big enough for 1 or 2 people if the back seats are flat. Personally I dislike the gearbox, too big a gap between 4th and 5th leading to 'Hunting" in hilly country or towing for instance. I have however learned to use the stick and manually select 4th as soon as the torque converter unlocks in 5th.

Look, it is a fantastic machine, we're on our second one.

Like Nys said, it very much depends on your dad's needs. The dogs would most likely find the Rok much better , viewing from the rear of the FJ is very limited.

And then there is the fuel bill difference

Mmmmm, two rather different vehicles, each brilliant for its intended purpose. The dogs: I'm thinking rather FJ with cargo net. If he's not dead set on those two, he should also try out all the bakkie-based SUV's (Everest, Fortuner, MU-X, Pajero Sport) and Prado or Pajero as these offer even more practicality. To get a DC ready for comfortable touring can be quite costly and a kitted out canopy eliminates the load bed; I don't think he wants the dogs on those fine leather rear seats.

Without getting into the suv vs double cab debate, the FJ (or any suv for that matter) has much better usable load space, especially when you get older........I only miss my double cabs about once a year
It all depends on the usage, if towing then any modern diesel is better imo.......the V6 is another league

Default FJ Cruiser or Amarok V6?

For the dogs, the amarok, let them ride in the canopy...
For the power and fuel consumption, also the amarok... The 4l petrol has power high up but not so much low down... My 2l 120kw has more torque low down than the v6. So if you like driving rustig and not winding it up then a diesel for me is miles ahead of a petrol... The 3l v6 will drive much nicer low down on revs...
For space and practicality when touring, well this is debatable depending on how many people travels with but I would also choose the amarok simply because your loading space is so much more and you don't need to pack everything inside the cabin and on top of the roof... second battery boxes fridges etc...
The FJ would, both being stock, be the better 4x4 machine, but would he really do the 4x4 stuff that he would use that extra capability? I think not. I for sure haven't with my amarok came close to the limits of the vehicle.

If you have a canopy the dogs can get in the back, when they are wet and dirty you just spray out the load bin...

For touring a double cab to me really doesn't have an equal... But that's purely opinion, not fact.

Also you can take the canopy off easily when you fit some pulleys in you garage roof.... being retired doesn't mean that he won't want to load some stuff at times that you maybe don't want inside a SUV...

Thanks for everyone's feedback... he and I did a roadtrip for his birthday through the cederberg and Tankwa, and had ample amount of time to discuss it as well... and came up with similar pro's and con's for both... I was reading a book last night where they also spoke about heart vs logic... I'll relay all of these helpful messages to him - hopefully that will assist him with his decision making. I think he should go on a proper drive with both and decide from there!

FJ - Lovely engine, much better 4x4 capabilities , heavy consumption, limited packing space if you're not towing.

Amarok - more space, not great but better consumption, touring rather than extreme 4x4. (Canopy for dogs), better gearbox

    FJ:

    1. Drove one in Zambia, would have murdered the owner to own it.
    2. Exceptional holding of value
    3. Very sought after, should be able to easily sell again if he wants to
    4. Lots of resources available on YT for inspiration on outfitting ideas, DIY and OEM
    5. Reliability, serviceability, availability of parts
    6. Lovely Fuggly. Classic Retro styling, you just have to like it.

    Amorok:

    1. Just another bakkie

Maybe, part of the final decision should be how he would like to utilize the cargo area. The FJ is a given, but the Amarok have different choices, canvas or alu, fitted kitchen, ect. I regularly transport two Golden Retrievers, and we bought a hammock that fits over the back seats, without touching them. It fastens on the head rests, so it is easy to transport the dogs.

My dad has decided on the FJ.
He might keep his Q5 and just buy a secondhand FJ in addition to it.
    Thanks For everyone's input.
