Default Audi A4 1.8 T Oil Consumption - engine rebuild

    Hi All

I recently bought a 2010 A4 1.8T multitronic. It had 70 000km on the clock, I soon realised it is using allot of oil. It turned out to use 1l per 800km!!!!

I was completely unaware of this well-documented issue on these cars.

I lodged a complaint at Audi SA but as I expected they don't offer any assistance in this regard. Just plain bullying! That car should have been fixed under freeway plan especially because the previous owner notified Audi of the issue at that time (2014 at 49 000km). Audi's view is that the 500ml per 1000km is still within spec (what rubbish!) hence the reason for the previous owner accepting the high oil usage.

Anyway, longs story short - the car officially failed the oil consumption test and Audi says I need to replace pistons and rings. They quoted R73 000 the previous owner who is also a friend of mine is willing to pay for repairs but not R73k. Someone I know repaired the 2.0T for R15 000 which is acceptable but that is down in Mosselbaai.

I basically need a reputable mechanic to quote on repairs - any recommendations for someone in Pta?

    Thank you

    Francois

    Not so quick!

Have they checked that the oil is not lost at the Turbo?

BTW, I cannot see that rings alone can be R 73 000.

It's not just replacing rings. It breaks the ring landing on the piston between the rings so it means new pistons.
But yes you can rebuild them properly for a lot less than R73k.

My neighbor just did the exercise on his 2.0T. Seems fine now. Think he paid 20 odd thousand. Some workshop in Edenvale. I can get the contact details of that place if you need. Let me know.

My only advise to anyone buying a car in this day and age is that google is your friend. The issue is well documented.
In any event, its basically a rebuild and a costly exersize.

Audi has always had an issue with oil consumption.

The I5 in 2.2/2.3/2.5/2.6L capacities as fitted to their sedans and the VW Microbus had a factory sanctioned consumption of 500ml per 1000km.

I dosed mine with Prolong out of shear desperation and it helped a lot.

I was going to suggest you but know you not in Pretoria....

Edit to add : Would also not buy a 2nd hand multitronic in a hurry. Also well documented issues with those gearboxes.

Pre 2007/2008 ones yes. After that the problem is sorted.

To honest, it is a lovely car I would have been very happy if it wasn't for the oil consumption. Still great value imo. Luckily my risks are covered that is assuming that the repair gos well

Not to derail and further cast dark clouds, but are you sure? I had it that the B8's also had multitronic issues?

Slightly OT but make sure you have the CVT serviced by a very reputable dealer & make 100% sure they use the right lubricant. The box will cost more than the engine.
