Default FORD RANGER 4X4 2.2 MANUAL VS AUTO? Which wold you choose and why

    Hi Guys,

Posting on behalf of a family member.

Anyone driven the above vehicle in either config and can comment. This is for models 2016 and up.

His main concerns are full consumption for the Auto for general town driving. Does trips up the west coast more often than not as well.

Will be 4X4ing in sandy dunes as well.

    Cheers

I think it boils down to personal preference. Just search the Ford thread and read the previous discussions. There were many and I doubt any real conclusion reached.

Told he should stop being so confused and just get a Hilux

We have a Ranger 4x4 2.2 Manual and it is an absolute joy to drive. We took it out on a mountain or two in Lesotho, and took it to Moz for some fun in the sand. We also drive it in Johannesburg traffic most days. Town driving makes it thirsty but I believe itís still more economical than the Auto. If driven on the open road it does surprise on fuel economy, but a heavy foot or towing something might make it heavier on fuel.

I bought the 2.2 manual and my reason is from a overlanding perspective coming from auto boxes. But I am amazed at how responsive the manual is. I am glad I chose it as the auto did feel a bit less responsive from a power deliverance point and I say again manual was my decision..

I had a bad experience with my previous Auto vehicle, constant hunting for gears and its as if the gearbox does not do full justice to the engin. The Torque converter eats all the power.

So I bought a 2.2 BT 50 manual and the only downside honestly is driving in traffic and quick pull away is more tricky.

    Consuption better
    Power delivery better
    highway traveling better
    Towing better
    Pros and cons I guess.

If that is his only concern, the answer is straight forward. Take the manual as the auto is more thirsty. No more arguing necessary.

I would not take a manual over an auto now even if it were R30 000 cheaper. I drove a manual car for 10 years and now auto for just over a year. I mainly drive in the city and I can't even try to compare manual vs auto in the city. Auto wins hands down for me and for that luxury, I will pay 0.5km p/l more or whatever the figure is.

For the odd 4x4 trail and sea holidays, the auto also works better for me.

No hunting between gears 5 and 6, The manual can be left in 6th for normal highway cruising whereas the Auto tend to shift according to road inclines.

One of my colleagues had the auto, and returned to the manual with his next buy.
He loved the auto for its convenience, but complained about the fuel consumption and the lack of power.

    I had a 3.2 4x4 MT and an old 3.0 4x2 Everest MT.
    Now drive a 3.2 4x4 AT Ranger and 2.2 4x2 AT Everest.
My late father used to have an old 3.0 1 tonner (Cortina) AT and my mother a 1.6 Escort AT. Those 3-speed boxes were thirsty and lazy and I promised myself never to buy an AT for myself.
BUT, after driving the newer AT cars there is no going back for me. I experience no problems with them. They are responsive and have enough power when needed. Off road the 4x4 is brilliant (and I use mine in very strange places and for various applications, as I have a holiday farm in the bushveld). If you want more, in my opinion, you are abusing your vehicle, then buy an old 4x4 and see how you can bugger it up as well as the environment...
Yes, the AT is a bit heavier on fuel, but the differince is much smaller than a while back.
It boils down to personal prevferance and in my opinion every person over the age of about 60 should drive an automatic - our reactions and coordination is getting worse, if we want to admit it or not, it is a fact...

On my 2nd 3.2 MT now. Have driven the 2.2MT and it is IMHO a very underrated option - more than enough grunt. As I seldom do lots of city / rush hour, I prefer the MT response over an auto. To me, my MT feels livelier than the same in auto and for the 2.2 I think it would be even more pronounced. If there's lots of city driving involved, I'd probably change, but for now, MT is my choice.

I had the 2014, 2.2 MT for a few years. Averaged 9.5 to 10.5 l/100km in town and around 8.5 on the highway. Problem for me was the backlash when gearing up or down. Irritating, so you learn to 'slip' the clutch to get a smooth ride. I now ride the 2017, 2.2 auto. Really nice drive. Fuel is up by 1 to 1.5l/100 km over the MT. I now have the auto slip between 2nd and 3rd. Also can be irritating, feels more like a CVT box. It really does well in off road conditions, especially heavy sand as recently found in the CKGR, Botswana.

Switched to auto with my 2nd Jeep years ago, traded that on an auto Territory, then an auto Ranger 3.2 XLT with the 2nd 3.2 XLT also auto. Yes a bit extra fuel and a little loss of power but most (all?) modern auto boxes have some sort of lock-up clutch that locks up the torque converter once you drive at a constant speed (hence the fuel penalty is really not much). If you tow or drive a lot in peak-hour traffic nothing but nothing beats an auto,,,and in the case of the Ford there always is the option to select sport mode (the Ranger gets a lot more lively then, and you can then also manually select gears). Personally I''l never go back to a M/T....
