Default A new baby in the house! 2004 Disco 2 TD5 Auto

    Oaks,

I am over the moon tonight!

I started looking for a Disco 2 TD5 Auto for my wife, and with all the examples in the market, in came a mint green 2004 one with only 211 000 km on the clock and it looked prestine on the pics. It stole my heart instantly.

The price though, was a bit on the high side and I made a preliminary offer, which was not accepted.

As luck would have it, I suddenly had to come to Gauteng this week, and yesterday I had to pass very close to the dealer where the vehicle was parked, and I went in to have a look.

The car inside and out, is as close to perfect as one can wish for a 15 years old vehicle.

The front and rear bumper have cracks, but that is an indication of 100% original bumper as every single one of them by now is cracked unless replaced because of accident, so I see that as a positive.

We went for a drive, and I immediately noticed the engine mountings were totally kapot, making the gear changes a bit harsh, and it was extremely slow of the mark at pullaway.

It also had all 4 tyres chewed off on the outside, which simply means there was a problem and the owner swopped tyres to try and extend the damage. But the tyres, although generally very good, are illegal.

What struck me most was that in spite of these niggles, I knew this will be a good car. There was not the slightest little voice nagging me hat something is not right.

With the above points, I made again the same offer as previously, and I told the oaks that this is a bloody nice car that, if not repaired by a loving owner right now, will be in ruins soon after as a next owner will find it frustrating.

I heard nothing this morning, and made my way home back to Bloem when I got the email that my offer was accepted + R 5000!!

It was one of those "I am not happy as I pay more than what I want and you are not hapy with what you get, so we have a deal!" kind of deals.

Sigh. I turned around just South of JHB and went back to complete the paper work and get the vehicle.

I paid the money, and immeidately took it for new tyres to have it legal for the way back.

The sloow pullaway is a buggered MAF, which is easily worked around by pulling the plug, and waiting a few seconds after startup for the ECU to go to default map, but at the expense of economy. I will get another unit tomorrow if I can.

It has ACE and air suspension, but the airbags were replaced with coils. All the components are still there though so I can reinstate if I want to.

In terms of condition, the seats and carpets are absolutely brand new perfect. The body seems to be 100% original. I could not see the sightest indication of even a fender bender.

Sadly the car never even saw gravel road, let alone off road. The chassis is so clean one can eat from it, so it is of extreme importance that the virgin has to be broken. We need to let that prestine body feel some African thorn soon.

I know some people may see the above as sacrilege, but my D1 went the same route. It was an exceptional example, and we worked it hard over the years. I have spend the money though to keep it good. Everything still works.

I intend then to keep this car also for as long as I can, and if it can do another 20 years service, it will be awesome.

I must say though, I find it hard to figure out how they managed to squeeze out the extra riding comfort from a chassis and wheelbase that is 100% Disco 1. That is quite impressive.

What is so nice about this vehicle, is that all the repairs will be easy, and if all done, it will be as good as new.

Overall then, this car offers me personally great value for money but for a D2, I did pay quite a premium.

We made it home in very good time.

We left Centurion at about 12:15, and with a two stops just for a status check, we made Bloem almost exactly at 17:00. 440km.

The Disco ran very well. The auto box locks up as it should.

I was just concerned about the no oil leaks at the stops.

I have not filled up again, due to a leaking breather pipe, but it seems like she returned about 10 L/100km at 110 km/h on the cruise control.

"HIGH MILEAGE" is such an abused term. What a beaut. You found the gem. You were able to look under the skirt nicely and behold, a maiden!

May you have smiles an miles with her.

Joshua, I would say the only place where the Auto is at slight disadvantage, is at pullaway.

Once the wheels are rolling, it is an absolute pleasure!

The torque converter gives it a few more "ratios" if you may call it that as it can lock up in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear bearing in mind that unlocked one loose a bit of efficiency, but at the advantage of higher revs where there is more power.

Bear in mind, when auto boxes fail, it does cost a few bucks. On this one R 17 500 for a fully reconditioned box and torque converter on exchange basis. Not bad if you think about it.

OK, before we get to that:

Let say I repair everything so my complete satisfaction - that will be windscreen, mountings, plastics, perished pipes, MAF etc. Lets say a vehicle in this state then comes on the market.

What would you be prepared to offer for a vehicle like this in the same deal as I had to buy - cash, private sale ?

(Just as a double check for my sanity.)

What is the book value? Only enthusiasts, like you and many of us, are prepared to pay more based on personal perceived values. Last year I replaced all shocks on my 2006 D3, on advice of the indy. I did not know that they were part of the airbags, and that together with other replacement stuff would cost more than R40k. It's book value can't be much over R100k, if that. But, the replacement turned it into such a nice drive again. Well worth it in my mind, even if I will not recoup this if I had to sell it now.
