    Default Sherman tank anyone?

    Something different..

I am a member of the MOTHS in Oranjemund. We have to move premises and have a tank problem.
We have two Sherman tanks at our shellhole which we can either sell as scrap metal or hopefully to a collector?
They were converted to electric motors to act as tractors for moving heavy equipment around for the mine. So they only consist of the body and tracks/suspension.
Any suggestions as to a way to dispose of them would be appreciated. Seems a pity to sell these grand old ladies as scrap metal.

Had I the space and the finances, I'd just about sacrifice a body part to have a Sherman tank on display on my property. Maybe if I win the lotto on Wednesday . . .

What about collectors or museums? You could advertise in major Southern African and American newspapers. (Almost) free WWII tank, just come collect?

If you can, please post some more photos of the old warhorses.

I think just equivalent to what we can get in scrap value. Not sure, we will have to get an estimate.

I'd take one if I could import it, but I'd probably be locked up for attempted insurrection or inciting a revolution or something.

Kimball, Mr Moll from Sandstone may be interested, he has a Sherman himself that he uses on the farm over weekends.

If you want, maybe PM me your Contact Details/email address, and I can try get him to contact you??

I bought his Cruiser 80 from him a while back, so I sort of know him.

About thirty years ago the Hamansdale (KZN) Moths/Shooting Range had a Sherman tank at the entrance to their clubhouse which was only open on weekends due to its remote location.

One Friday afternoon the guys arrived at the Clubhouse for the Friday shoot and drinks.

    Guess what hey found -

    SOMEBODY HAD STOLEN THE SHERMAN.

Some more photographs including the serial numbers of both tanks.
The one photo shows the inside with the electric motor conversion. So yes, they are electric and environmentally friendly

Kim....maybe speak to the municipality about the third one...in the park...if you get an sale offer...3 might be more attractive in terms of consolidating transport....especially if they are partially stripped...tracks removed and folded.

Nice project for some of the retirees in town...

I personally have never seen kids climbing on the park one...maybe they'll be happy to get rid of it..

Another thing....there used to be a few more in the mine scrapyard...have they all been removed?

    Is that you Ron?
I believe there were a few buried near pcc. Not sure where?
I think the one in the park should stay there, its a part of history.

Yes Kim....imagine what that buried fleet must be worth...maybe that's where the turrets are..?

    Agree about the park one...

I spoke to someone once who said there were 14 shermans put into a hole and buried - I wonder if the burying would preserve them or accelerate their corrosion?

Just for interest - Here is a sketch from about 1960 from a CDM (now Namdeb) employee information booklet...of one of the Sherman's.

I would think some of them were used with their original engines in before converting to electric motors with trailing cables...
