    Default Military Willy's CJ6 Restoration

    Hi

For years I have been wondering about my own restoration project. I've spend many hours looking at other projects,
some completed and some becoming a bit of a mess along the way. Biggest problem is that they never get finished.
I did not want to start a project and spend thousands of Rand's on a unfinished project you can barely give away.

Anyway, I am proud to announce the start of my own restoration project on a Willys Jeep CJ6. The build so far is about 4 months in
and so far I think we are on track.

Please not this is my first restoration project so all information and help would be appreciated.
The Idea is to keep the jeep as original as possible without spending a fortune. (I dont mind spending some money on original parts but
have seen some builds go well over 200k)

What i need help with is the following.

Info on the jeep, I am still not certain on the year model and exactly what they were used for in the military. I gathered so far that the rearend was
modified by the SANDF to accommodate the Jerrycans (witch is still original Willys by the way) and spear tire without adding cm's to the over all length of the jeep.

Parts, I will soon need to order spare parts and currently I have a Full cart at Kaiser Willys in the US. I am trying to postpone my order as late as possible to avoid a second
order on parts I might have missed, but was wondering if any parts is available locally?

Tail lights , the taillights on the jeep seems to be original but are not stocked by Kaiser Willys and 1 is damaged. Perhaps it was also modified by SANDF? Were can i get one?

I would like to have an original canvas roof or at least a good quality replica , and doors. (will remove and sell the existing roll cage + doors and canvas top)

Again I am new at this so all help and info will be appreciated.

Wow, allow me to say this: You've done a helluva lot of quality work for four months! Good going!

Can't wait to see the final product.

Wot he ^ said, and also agree that Locklaw may prove an invaluable source of knowledge. You have progressed very well in the time you have spent thus far.

I saw an absolute minter driving down past the entrance to Kyalami last week and it really was a treat to behold. Hope yours comes together just as nicely. I am not sure how much you are spending, but you may be supprised by what it is worth if you look in the US at what they go for?

Have a look here for parts, too. Aftermarket, but apparently good quality.

    Hi

So this week we did the breaks front and rear replacing all the small brake cylinders and some of the brake lines. wheel bearings looked ok so we packed with new grease front and rear and replaced rear oil inner seals. also fitted the engine back to the chassis and installed clutch and brake pedals. also got my seats back from the upholster
shop. also replaced all diff and gearbox oil and serviced the engine. still need to test brakes hopefully all is well ,then we can put the tub on. also did the handbrake.
    pics will follow
