Default Weskus Weekend Elandsbaai/lambertsbaai route and early flowers?

    Hi Guys,

I am heading up to Elandsbaai this weekend and would like to take a scenic drive up early Friday morning we are in no hurry to get there and would like to take the lesser traveled roads in search of early flowers, happy to take dirt roads if necessary.

Whats the status on the early flowers this year?

Would love a nice Route suggestion?

    Cheers,
    Alex.

Malmesbury, Hopefield turn off R to Velddrif. Check the Bergriver in flood when you turn off R at Bergriver station just after the 90 degree bend. Go over the bridge at Kerchefontein.

Follow the dirt road untill you hit the Piketberg Velddrif tar road.
Turn L to Velddrift. Follow the route to Dwarskersbos and then on to Elandsbay.
Lots of flowers normally on that road.
    And enjoy my home valley.

Hi BarnieH, can one drive the route between Velddrif and Elandsbay with platkar? There also seems to be a section that looks like it runs along a railway line, is that section of the road open to the public?

No problem at all. Most of it is tar road but take it easy.Last time I went there were lots of potholes.

From Velddrift to Elandsbay is tar topped. Narrowish and full of bends, but easily drive-able with a platkar.
I did not realize that you plan to drive in a platkar.
The turoff after Bergriver station to the Velddrift road might be tricky as the first part to the bridge at Kerschefontein is through
the "vleie" of the Berg river and seeing that the dam is overflowing it might be a muddy drive
You will spot that 1 km into the drive and then just turn around, follow the tar road past the silos and drive past scenic farms lie Langrietvlei.

Thanks @BarnieH, that sounds like a nice drive! I shall report back after the weekend and let you know how it went.

I will be doing it in a 4x4 so the trickier it is the better

Then the other question is, any sign of the flowers up there yet?

Maybe drive from Velddrif to Aurora, Redelinghuys and then Elandsbaai. Dirt roads but platkarable.

Have a look at what Paul posted in the Northern Cape section.
    There should be.
    What Olyfboer also said.
There is also a road from Aurora through Kapteinskloof on the western side of the Piketberg mountain that is very scenic.

Thanks that sounds nice, is that the one that goes through Banghoek Nature Reserve? Is that road open all the way through to the R366 from the Aurora/Piketberg side?

The section before the turn R before Hopefield, the bergriver road, I was thinking of going N7 from CT then going Atlantis - Darling, taking the dirt road running parrallel to the R307 which meets up at the R45 - Hopefield turn off R - Velddrif - R399 turning off onto Kapteinskloof road- Redelinghuys - Elandsbaai.

Sounds like quite a drive though so will see what the feel is on the day haha.

Thank you Sorry I have hijacked the thread a bit. We are flying down at the end of the month for a long weekend to see some flowers and visit family and we will have a rental, so in that regard it will be a go any where car but yes it will be platkar....I have to remind myself that we wont our Isuzu so cant be too enthusiastic about place to go to.

How safe is Elandsbaai camping these days? Ive camped there quite often before, but not for a while now. Used to get the day visitors that may make noise, but never had anything stolen of felt threatened.

A tip when flower tripping is to plan the trip so the sun is at your back... and you are looking into the flowers. So morning move east to west and afternoons west to east.
Talk softly, carry a big stick.
