Thanx for your comments Tony. The two nights at Mongu are "float" days and if it is possible to travel from (Hook Bridge to Kwale with restocking) in one day then I'll skip Mongu completely. I could then stay longer at Mapunga or re-adjust my other stays.

We did this exact same thing few weeks ago. Started at Hook bridge (Roy's camp) with first light, stopped in Mongu for about an hour and a half for refueling and restocking, then continued to Kalabo, arrange entry formalities at African Parks office there, took a ferry across Luanginga river and comfortably reached Kwale campsite by mid afternoon. Could probably even made it to Katoyana campsite in time, if needed.

Road from Kafue to Kalabo is very good to excellent, except for 100 odd kilometers around Kaoma, which are terrible.

Thanx Ortellus, Great news, then I am going to plan to skip Mongu. I've read up about the 100kms you refer to, i'll just have to take it easy.

My gratitude to all that have added comments to my itinerary and after considering all the suggestions I have revisited it and adjusted the Zambian days to what should be close finality. I attach the latest version. Please kick away.

The route to SLNP will sort it self out as it happens and with luck I could score. But as the idea of the trip is to take it easy I am not too phased with 5 days to get to SLNP from Jhb.

Fantastic trip IMHO, also enough flexibility just in case.

Just came back from a 3 week trip in Zambia.

Road between Mazabuka and Kafue is under construction and the bypasses are bad. The Great-north road is not bad, few potholes here and there. Great-east is also not bad except south of the Luangwa River is a short section with potholes. Also a short section just outside of Chipata to Mfuwe is potholed.

Between Sesheke and Kazangule a 100km section is still very bad, (takes 2.5hrs). Last 35km to Sesheke is repaired

Animals, pedestrians, bicycles, horrible humps in villages, and the many trucks, and road blocks on the roads slows you done. Police are very friendly. Trucks stop in the road, no shoulder to pull off. Tree branches is a warning for a broken truck in the road. Right flicker have many meanings.

Never found a grader on any gravel road.

Kazangula is still a border post to avoid if one can Hopefully once the bridge is completed the nonsense will stop.

And get the road tax for all the roads you will travel else they will sent you back the the last toll gate. Then at the toll gates they only stamp that road tax paper.
