You go to your mates house for a braai and he/she tells you not to bring anything, he/she is sorted, only to find its a good braai but he/she doesnt have................

Its that one meat (or side dish) that for you, makes a braai a braai, what is it?

Wors - no wors, no braai.
Rolls - have to have a roll with a braai

I would say wors as one of the meats(almost a side dish actually). My favorite is a lamb chop or three but I realize that these are expensive and cost too much to provide for a whole mob. Then either pap en sous or a potato salad. Then I'm a happy camper

A decent piece of steak, or at least a piece of RED meat.

I suppose there is a myriad of things that could be added, pap, gravy, salad, jacket potatoes, veggies, etc.

My biggest one is however a "dop". So what!!! call me an alcoholic, it's who I am

    Braai broodjies.

You decide on what meat you are going to braai tonight and then add braaibroodjies.

A family member got a new boyfriend. We get invited to a braai at their house in Moreesburg. Naturally I go to the famous Lategans Butchery and get some great wors, steak and chops. braaibroodjies, garlic roll and salads too. Boyfriend tells me not to bother, he has everything for the braai. Put my stuff in the freezer and take it home. So I do that. He lights the fire and I'm worried about the amount of coals and tell him. Not to worry he says so I sit back with a whisky. When the coals are ready, he hauls out a single steak and chucks it on the grid. Wife looks at me, I look at wife. I ask him if he want's some wors and chops as they aren't frozen yet. No, he says. When the meat is done to his liking, he takes it off the grid and cuts it in four pieces. We each get a piece. No salads, broodjies, nothing. I go get take aways.

At the next braai I bring wors and pork chops and insist they're braaied. Learnt the lesson and insist on the broodjies etc too. He braais everything to medium rare - the way he likes it - including my pork chops! The rest of his extended family was there too and when he took the meat off and it was dishing up time, they were first in the que. All the good meat anybody else brought is gone and we're left with chicken legs and wings. I refuse to eat the underdone pork. Go buy take aways again.

Was I glad to see her dump him a few months later.

I have also been invited to a braai once where I was told ' all was in hand ' only to find that the meat had been sliced and plated up, cold...

I have learnt my lesson now and I always ask very detailed questions before accepting an invite ...

    Wors, beef and pork
    Chops
    Steak

Slightly off topic. We went for a Sunday lunch once, no roast potatoes. Who has a Sunday lunch with no roast potatoes?! That should be standard.

My Dad always made sure there are viennas close by. So as soon as the kids start getting hungry, just dump a vienna on the fire and 2min later that kid is running around quite happily, with a vienna in hand.

I always like a nice inch thick ribeye steak . Just salt and pepper for seasoning nothing else.

I'm not fussy and often don't partake in the food so for me, a good fire and a Captain is most important.

In my 20s and 30s it was steak, had to have steak and wasnt fussy what steak so long as there was steak

Then a braai wasnt a braai unless there was wors, had to have wors or it wasnt a braai.

In my mid 30s to early 40s, it was everything and I used to do those day long peusel braais with small portions and a bit of everything which kept the wimmins and kids happy as there was always something on the table at any given time.

Now, I dont mind what it is, just being thankful that there is always something to braai. If something is lifted out in the morning for the evening, I will braai it

I do enjoy the difficult cuts nowadays, US style BBQ, low n slow, 12 hours in the Weber Smokey Mountain

The Captain enjoys these too, as the tradition in my house is you have an ale of other beverage as soon as you light the fire even if it is 06h00 for a beef brisket that will be eaten at 18h00

I didnt It Are Time last evening as Swambo bought 2 tsikens so I ''wouldnt have to sit in the cold braaing'' hahaha, after 35 years you would think she knows I dont mind sitting in the cold, the heat, the rain in order to braai. As we still had schwarma ingredients from Friday, thats what we had last night so I invited the MIL and FIL over today for the tsiken and I will braai the sides, happy days

Had my folks and maatjies over last night, blesbok billies and droewors with smoked wildbees fillets for cold starters. Mains was steak and groen groen slaai, ciabatta broodjie to mop up all the sousies, roomys for desert and Ethiopia coffee to end the evening.

When everybody left me and wifey finished off a Top Deck watching forged in fire reruns.

    Great evening had by all.
