    Default Prad0 150 V6 Waterpumo - When/What to look for??

    Keep forgetting to ask.

I've read on numerous Threads that the V6 Prado (120/150) may have issues with water pumps.

    1) When is this usually happening, meaning at what km's, or difficult to tell??

    2) What are the warning signs/sounds/smells??

    3) What causes this issue, belts/coolant/gasket, or does it just happen, is it just a weak spot??

    4) Any preventative measures to take on this issue when servicing??

Mine is a 2013 V6, mileage is around 125000 or so - havent driven it in a looooong time.

    THANKS8)8)

You got a looooong way before you need to worry about that I think.... More close to 200 000km.

I sold my 150 on 170 000km without any problems and original waterpump.

They tend to go around 180 to 200k km if I recall and it just happens. Best to do water pump and thermostat as preventative maintenance.

But are there any early warning signs?? Leaks or whatever?? Maybe a coolant smell??

I need to know this anyway, if maybe looking to buy another in as stock, etc etc.

Petri you can usually see some antifreeze streaks below the waterpump.

Someone else posted here not so long ago a bulletin or something from Toyota where it was stated that many waterpumps are replaced while the problem was actually something else. Can't remember what eaxctly.

Thread you are referring to might be this one:

    https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...mps?highlight=

Keep in mind that the bulletin is from 2007, so it should include the 1GR-FE single VVTi engine in the Prado 120. There were concerns raised that it might not be applicable to the dual VVTi engine in the Prado 150. The two engines have different coolant pumps according to the part numbers, however I'm not sure whether they differ technically or whether it's essentially the same pump in a different housing.

Mate of mine just changed his at 220k km, and it was leaking top and bottom. Heís not sure if itís been changed before.

Problem is you canít see it leaking.

Itís a R4.5k job(at an indie) that I would do every 100k km just be safe. And do the serpentine belt at the same time. And then you have no maths problems to figure out when itís time to change, do it 100k, 200k, 300k km etc

Itís 4.5c per km insurance well spent.
    Cheers

I'm at 147kkm and no signs of leaks and no intention to replace yet and I'm a Toyota trained makkie so relax and enjoy the car, perhaps use it a bit more?

My SIL have a 2006 Prado 120, waterpump is fine but for some reason lost waterthrough the head gasket , vehicle currently on about 280K , I think maybe previous owner replaced waterpump but damage was done already.

.........Did Bethlehem - Welkom - Potch and back this weekend, spare. Goes like a bomb!! And consumption is a HUGE surprise for a V6.......!!!8)

    Anyway, thanks again Guys.

Seems that this (potential) hassle is more on the 120 then??

I'll just regularly keep an eye on water levels and leakage signs on the water pump.
