    Default Franschoek ripp off

So we flew down for the weekend for my wife’s birthday, we stayed in a great place with the intention to enjoy great food and drink. We did make the rounds to a couple of nice wine farms, but I have realized that the Western Cape wants to charge insane prices for stuff that we cook at home as part of our normal lives. I am a foodie and I do not mind paying for quality. But what I got this weekend was getting screwed!

Sorry guys but it seems that having a beautifull setting means customers are getting $&@$ed!

I am not impressed. I can make better creme brulee from a box!

But can you serve it on your terrace overlooking the Franschoek Mountains?

    Well ja.

In these days it ain't that difficult to cook better than a restaurant if you are a little interested in food.

In a place like Franschoek, that boasts about the food an wine there, I would also have had high expectations.

Perhaps you should console yourself in that most people thinks the Spur is a top treat.

    How would I put it?

It is sort of like my E320 CDi Benz was. 165 kW and 540 Nm ruined by an auto box which was awfully slow with a kickdown.

I absolutely hated it that the engine had to make up for the retarded box. I though for that class of car, I would get competence in both.

    Franschoek is an expensive area!

I have not dined there for years but it certainly used to boast some of the best restaurants.
Sorry to hear about your experience.

I believe that Franschoek has become so expensive to opperate in that the restaurants think they can serve you cardboard on a plate, charge a an exorbitant price for it and think it’s acceptable. I am sorry but we sould be aiming higher! As a hobby chef I could have topped anything I had in a restaurant this whole weekend at a less than quarter of the price.

I remember doing a walking tour of the old city part of Dubrovnik. We finished just on lunch time and asked the local guide for a suggestion on where to eat. She told us to go to any restaurant past a certain point further down the harbour wall.

"The tourists never go down that far, so the prices are reasonable and the food is local and good."

Unfortunately, Hooly, you were missing the local knowledge.

There are some great places around the winelands, but you need to know where to go.

Louis, volg keer, kom kuier eerder by my. Dan praat ons oor ons jong dae, en kook iets lekkers.

I normally try to stay away from things I can make at home. I enjoy the food concerned to the area I visit.

That’s exactly the reason why we came here, to enjoy the wine and supposedly excellent restaurants. Not that is was all bad.

Our first choice when we arrived on Thursday was actually pretty good. But when you come here and you pay premium prices you expect all the restaurants to be way above average.

And I thought the Americans sorted out auto boxes a long time ago.

At least now I have the DSG. Lovely lovely.

The best meals I have had have not been from top notch restaurants, but from the obscure back alley off the tourist trap routes, with Mama in the kitchen, Papa taking orders and the son running tables.

And to be fair, a lot of so called good wines I wouldnt ruin good slap tjips by using it as vinegar, the terroir be damned.

The worst paella I've ever tasted was a grossly overpriced offering in Barcelona's gothic area...........

if you visit a tourist trap, expect to get trapped.

The best schnitzel was in a back-neighbourhood eatery on the outskirts of Vienna.

Franschhoek is silly. Stellies is much nicer.

Yeah, I want good honest food, I dont want to have to wonder if I should photograph it or eat it or move 3 runner beans tied with a carrot to find the meat. And ale, proper ale.
