Default Jhb to kgalagadi N12 via Kuruman or as an option, via Kimberley ?

We are overdue another visit to Kgalagadi and have booked 23 nights in November (TR , Mata Mata & Nossob) . Weve always travelled N12 via Kuruman/Upington but as an option are considering JHB Kimberley Upington . Perhaps staying at Mokala for one/two nights on way . Sounds like a worthwhile stop. Stopovers on the N12 route seem more problematic thesedays and whilst the Kimberley route seems to be a couple of hours longer travel time , it may be worthwhile . Would appreciate any input to help our deliberations whether it be travel time , road conditions , stopover related or whatever. On way down to Kimberley Im also thinking going down to BLOEM and across to Kimberley rather than Via Parys and Blomhof as Google keeps suggesting . Who knows , I may stick to the old route but your input would be very welcome

If you've never been to Mokala you should really go! The N1 to Bloem is x100 better simply because the problematic section between Kroonstad and Ventersburg is now double, as is the ~10km busy stretch skirting Winburg. The N8 to Kimberley can be busy at times but the surface is good. The N8 between KBY and Groblershoop is an absolute joy to drive and quite scenic much of the way. Stay away from the R31 over Barkly West! Busy; full of trucks an suicidal drivers. The N10 between Groblershoop and Upington is winding but better than it used to be. From Upington to the Park is a breeze. Enjoy!

Thanks very much for the input. How long does the drive from Kimberley to Upington take you ? We would be with light 4x4 van and (eg) 100kph is pretty easy . Your comments re Mokala are definitely noted !

Kimberley to Upington via the N8 is only 400 km's of easy driving. It should take no more than five hours including a fuel/refreshment stop in Groblershoop even when towing. However, I'd suggest a two-night stopover in Mokala, then you take the gravel roads to Salt Pan to join up with the R385 over Douglas to Campbell where you join up with the N8 again. The really scenic stretches of the N8 are between Griekwastad and Groblershoop anyway; red dunes blown up against the mighty Langeberge!

Unless my maps are out of date but it looks like the N8's most western point is Kimberley.
Shortest route from Kimberley to Upington is via the R64 through Griekwastad to Groblershoop where you meet up with the N10.

Yup, that stretch of the R64 is part of the N8 nowadays.

End of May I went to Mokala and then Kgalagadi. Bela Bela to Mosu camp in Mokala was 10 1/2 hours with stops for fuel an refreshment. Motswedi camp in Mokala to Twee Rivieren was 8 3/4 hours with fuel stop in Groblershoop and 1 hour stop at Kalahari Mall in Upington. I used the north (Lilydale) entrance to and from Mokala as there is much less corrugated gravel and a bit more time in the park. The N12 was fine with not much traffic going to Mokala as it was on a Saturday. Hope this helps.

Has anyone been at the kalahari tourism info centre and campsite just before the nam border. Planning to stay over there.
