Default Car Roof Lining - how to fix??

This is actually the wrong Forum, its not a 4x4.

We have this mint 2006 Audi A4 that I bought from a Member here, I use it now and then. GREAT car in mint nick.

The car's roof lining is beginning to sag though.

    Just the "cloth".

    ............what to do??

Or is'nt there really a (good) fix for this, look at replacing the whole toot??

I've heard somewhere that there are Guys that "injest" a glue or something.........?? Or is this sloppy??

    THANKS

Had the same with the P38. There is a layer of cloth then a thin foam which the cloth is adhered to and then the roof lining former.

The foam turns to dust and since the cloth is attached to the foam it sags.

Some of the ''home'' remedies suggested toothpaste as an adhesive but it didnt work permanently. Gluing the cloth back only makes the cloth stained.

I just had it replaced with carpeting eventually

I believe that "sew no more" in a syringe works? Inject through lining then push to stick? Never done it myself tho.

Don't mess around - not worth the time and trouble and does not last.

Take it to a vehicle upholsterer - they will replace the entire roof lining with new cloth and sponge inner lining - not hugely expensive.
Trying to glue etc. will not work because the next section just falls away and as said stains the lining.

Did this with me (ex) 32 year old BMW and (ex) 18 year old Ford Ranchero - no more problems after that and they looked like NEW!!

used to replace/re-do these type of roof lining when I was a little bit younger. We used to buy and sell opel kadett from the late 80's and early 90's. This was also a huge issue with them. Sponge, age and some sun light cause this.

Remove liner completely(way easier) remove cloth and rub the foam that stays behind(skoppie besem werk lekker of jou hand)

once clean cardboard genkem and put on new cloth. -### job, maar as jy dit rerig wil doen.

En daai Genkem sal merke agter laat op die" lining".

Gaan beter na n plek wat "seats, covers, etc.) doen en vervang die hele ding.

You need to be really careful with the glue yes.
We managed it well without issues but the first attempts were messy

Know an upholsterer in Jo'Burg who did a fabulous job re glueing a lining for me, recommended him to a mate and he was also very happy. No need to buy a new head liner.

    Take it to a pro.

Home DIY repairs are fine for an old Disco or Defender, but I'd say an A4 will look very sad with carpeting on the roof.........

Me too please Steady. Might be an option.

Looks like the whole lining can come off, and its "separate" from the pillars etc etc, so yes, if an upholsterer can match the fabric I actually think this is very do-able.

So Petri ... is that a wrap?

The lining is supposed to be INSIDE not on TOP (Remember that advert?)

my A4 did the same, as said the foam turns to dust and trying to fix is a waste of time.

I had a guy in Durban replace the doors and roof.

Ridiculously low cost and professionally done.

Don't try yourself, you will cover the seats etc with glue!

I can't remember the cost but it was not worth trying to do it yourself.

any material shop will sell the material with the foam> don't reuse the ceiling that is falling, as the glue won't stick to the collapsed foam for long.

The other way is to buy the aerosol glue, pull off one corner and spray inside for a temporary fix. car sellers do this.

Just had my 2006 Jetta done by Leather Tek in Pta North. R4.6k of which R1.7k goes to the guy they got in to strip and put back panels due to sunroof. All material was replaced. Guess there are
cheaper places but these guys was recommended by a 2nd, hand car dealer and the panelbeaters I use now and then.

Just take out the hard board, remove old lining and use gemchem to glue vehicle carpet to the roof. I have done it to all my vehicles, you wouldn't know it wasn't factory.

It's also a super cheap repair. Will upload a pic of it shortly.
