We have one similar to this which has copper mesh and works very well.
    Had it for many years.

We have always baked our own bread. Potbread does not stay fresh for very long at all, so even more reason for toast.
When on the road there is not always time to bake your own bread and as per the original post, gas has to be used for toast. This is when you are on the move and might often not even be lighting a fire.

I normally just fry the bread with a bit of butter.
Or make french toast with another egg on top.

There appears to be a single slice version as well.
What do you think of the design?
I cannot find the single slice version anywhere. does anyone know who stocks it?

I just use the same non stick pan you use to do your eggs ,just keep an eye on it and don't let the heat get to intense .A skottel works as well.

On gas I just use the same pan as the eggs. Butter on one side of the bread only. A little left over oil in the pan helps to brown it quickly (and shortens your life by 15 minutes per slice).

We also have a 2 slice electric for emergencies in the conqueror.

Still the best way is to toast is on a wood fire. Hot coals, grid not too low. Butter on one side only for regular toast, both outsides for braai broodjies.
This might be the best tip of your life:

    BRAAI BROODJIES IS DRAAI BROODJIES!

Rather turn too often than not, then you will achieve a gradual browning. Remember that the browning is caremelisation of the sugars in the dough. Thats why its nice and toasty one second, and burnt the next. Turning regularly will slow the process and still continue slowly for a bit while facing up, without the risk of burning.

Yes also use this. Works best out of all the gadgets I have tried on gas

As i said. This is the one. Cheap as chips. Also stops the pap from burning on the gas stove.
I grew up using one of these. Still works better than all the other re-inventions of the wheel.
