Default Dust inside 2019 Toyota Hilux Bakkie

I have a new 2019 Toyota Hilux Bakkie, with a canopy
The load area gets very dusty. If I look towards the tailgate from the driver area, there are large areas of light on either side of the tailgate. So there is no seal between the tailgate and the side of the vehicle.
    Is this a design fault?
How can I seal this area?

    Thanks in advance

Not a design fault - all bakkies have the same issue (the space between tailgate and bodywork being about a finger-thickness width) which is intentional due to body movements (twist/bend/etc) and loose components (ie, tailgate).

Luckily it is quite easy to fix it by simply buying some self-adhesive rubber strips and paste it around the edges. You can see more about it here (in another part of the forum):

Yes all bakkies that I've ever been have this problem. Three ways to solve this:

1.buy the rubber seal tape like Groenhoender says.

    2. open your canopy window when driving on dirt road.

    3. Buy bakkie dust seal kit

What is in the dust seal kit, over priced foam sealing tape?

Dust happens in ALL bakkies when you go on a dirt road ..Get a 4x4 workshop to put an anti dust kit in ..mine cost R 2000 about and stops about 40% of the dust = waste of money ..Live with it like Defender drivers live with oil leaks

I had a Defender single cab, with canopy on the back. The cab had very little dust. The back even less. I sealed the tailgate, and had water proof openings on either side of the forward facing canopy wall, which created positive pressure in the back.

    R2 000!?! Why so much?
Also sounds they did not install it properly.

Should be around R350-450 for kit.
Pretty much easy to DIY too, with some slight effort here and there to trim it.
    Took me about 15-20min.

Also feel around the top inside edge of the load bin you may find openings, shove sponges in there, it helps a lot to keep dust out and if you keep the canopy window open a bit you will get very little dust. My opinion those tail gate seals do very little.

This is the solution. When I build the canopy for my 79 Cruiser I made two forward facing openings to pressurise it. Tailgate not sealed yet but no dust enters the canopy.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

Check THIS thread I posted with what I did back in 2012 on the Vigo Hilux I had. I'm sure this can be applied to newer models as well. Dust is evil...it will find its way in. This mod made the load box about 98% dust proof.

Jip, I bought those small spong/rubber patches that have adhesive on them you use for furniture on floors to prevent damage. They come in various sizes and shapes.

Clean the inside of the side rails of the loadbin well, and simply apply a patch over each small hole.

There are quite a few each side.

Nothing wrong with it - it is just a soft-cover version of a canopy, with just less height, and no means of safe-keeping posessions due to lack of security options. Unless one goes for a roller-cover (with a lock).

However, both soft tonneau and roller-cover also does not keep load bin dustfree as the problem lies with the tail gate and the spacing around it.

Apologies I did not realise the dust is a problem with the canopy on

This is a concern and the manufacturer of the vehicle and the canopy should offer solutions for sealing prior fitting a canopy.

I would guess the air turbulence (Sometimes referred to as dirty air) behind the vehicle causes the dust to be sucked into the cavities mentioned in this thread.

Maybe canopy design is the culprit. Perhaps a lip on top of the canopy (wing) and mud flaps behind the wheels might help?

Wet towel at tailgate gaps did the trick for many trips.

I have almost no dust by just opening the canopy window. Unfortunately have to remember to close it when it is raining.
