Default Larger wheels on a Venter

I hope the clever guys on here will be able to assist me with some advice, since we now only have SUV's in the family I was wondering about fitting larger tires to our 6ft Venter trailer. I don't intend to use it off road or in any other way than what the manufacturer intended it for, but was wondering if one can fit larger wheels and tires to raise it up off the ground so that the nose isn't always pointing up. That coupled with a little flag on the back should also help the little trailer be visible behind an SUV.

Any recommendations? Is this a stupid idea? Input will be appreciated!

If the wheel arches allow (sometimes they can be moved up, not sure about Venter) I reckon it's a great idea. If you fit all terrains you'll only change them every 5 years. A trailers nose pointing upwards is not good. The trailers vibration etc, if not completely full might cause load to shift to back of trailer...not good.

I would have to check, but I suspect 10", it is an older model so the wheels are quite small.

I am not sure if the arches could be moved without major work, it may be easier to extend the mount for the shackles, and basically lift the trailer a little. A nose up trailer is very much a problem, I have seen some of the clips on how unstable it gets and it is pretty scary.

Thanks for the input so far, I will try and take a couple of photos over the weekend in order to get a better idea of what I am dealing with.

10 inch to 13 inch yes. Its relatively easy by welding in an extra saddle plate to act as a body lift. We do this often.

13 to 14 inch is a lot harder and will need bigger mudguards. You also have to be careful with the high carrying capacity on these bigger tyres as the shaking and bouncing will destroy the body / chassis.

I upgraded mine from 10 to 13. Another tip the older venter trailers with 10" usually had a gvm of about 560kg. If that's the case your leaf springs are I think 4 blades and they sag quite a bit when loaded decreasing the height, what I did was put new leaf springs 900kg 7 or 8 blades, adds more stability and less rocking also increases the height about an inch and keeps it there when loaded. On the back of the d4d runs pretty level

Thanks everyone! I don't intend on going huge, nothing close to matching the tire size on the actual car, just a bit bigger. Unfortunately all of our SUV's have detachable towbars so drop plates are out of the question.

I have noticed the leaves sag quite a bit under load, so new leaf packs should be a viable option as well!

Careful, bigger wheels also tend to put higher loads on wheel bearings, so it may be best to get new axle with higher capacity bearings if conversion is any more than 10 to 13 inch.

I've been wanting to do this for a while now on our quad bike trailer, as I often tow on gravel roads. I don't quite trust the little Lego wheels currently on there. However, I will have to replace the axle to get larger tyres on there.

So instead of doing that, I just added a second spare wheel. Much cheaper.

Drop plate is not an option when the towing vehicle is a touareg with a factory removable gooseneck....

OK I have just bought a 7ft old venter trailer. It has 10 inch and will fit 13 inch wheels. To lift it I will be manufacturing a 100mm block using flat bar welded together to for a billiard. Then drill a hole in top to take the spring center bolt and weld a bolt at the bottom to locate into the axle plate, longer U bolts to cater for the extra height. No need to alter the suspension and mounting points with longer shackles etc.

The diameter only goes up by about 50mm so a 25mm spacer is all you need, Hunter4x2. The U bolts are available from the Venter trailers website.

Had my Venterjie upgraded from 10" wheels to 13" wheels some years ago at one of our local wheel alignment places. Can't recall the cost but it was perfectly reasonable and the trailer has done many kms since. It's a good match.

Thanks for the comments! I am astounded at the spares available on the Venter website, one can basically scratch build a trailer from that!

For the 13" rims and wheels I got mine at burquip they are R828 compared to venter R1288. But the leaf springs are cheaper at Boksburg venter. https://burquip.co.za/product-catego...im-tyre-combo/

10" wheels on a trailer is a nono, as max speed on those small tyres and wheel bearings is limited, acc to Roadque in Pta.
Iirc max speed was 100 or 80km/h for the small wheels. I did not really pay attention to detail as i do not own a 10" trailer, but have since then observed may a 10" doing 140 or more on our highways some with the Moz triangle sticker on, thus travelling huge distances at high speed, with poor road conditions in Moz as well

Tyres of the 10" Venter have a rating for speed is what i am saying, the older Mini tyres used could have a different rating
