Its the same kind of people who have split window kombis, or mk1 golfs with the retro cool roof rack and surfboard strapped to it. That surfboard will never touch water in its life.

Now you see, I would seriously consider something like that that incorporates the angular design ques of my Hummer, with the same type of wheel arches, narrow windows, low centre of gravity etc.

Thats what I mean by re-imagining a caravan. The internal components come out to make up campside furniture. Video is great https://happiercamper.com/media-gallery/#videos

Estee - you have a very sharp mind.

Like you said - if a sort of universal "base" can be used, just different styling, wheels, colours, etc etc for each manufacturer.

Dink hoe gaan so Jeep oranje funky campertjie lyk.........met nice wiele/decals/interior en so aan. Of daai Groenes.

not retro caravan related, but it would be like me making these and then trying to sell them for a profit, market very limited, although retro, they are easily surpassed by fiberglass and plastic kayaks

Those are really good looking! I would struggle to put them on water, even if they are made to be on water. As far as the retro style caravans go, imagine a nice retro vehicle to tow it with, like an old 50's era Chev Apache step-side, white walls and all...

And the flexibility of being able to remove the interior fittings and use them outside or reconfigure inside to suit your needs, like the happiercamper video, I think thats a winner for the younger set.

But it is a thing of beauty.

Modern design just don't have anything on the style and flair of the 60's!

Jokes aside, an Airstream is basically an artwork, a real thing of beauty with some practicality thrown into the mix. They don't make them like that anymore. But practically, I just don't think there are enough rich caravanners in SA to justify this.
Airstreams can be bought brand new in the UK and USA. I would not be seen dead in an Airstream after having been inside two of them that were on display.
There are a couple of retro-caravans in the UK mostly at shows however they required a lot of work to be brought back to original condition. In those days they still had glass windows.

“Retro” teardrop trailers are actually very popular in America. Especially with overlanders.

One of the brands that make some great looking and functional teardrop trailers is Timerleaf...but at quite a price...

I have actually wondered whether there is a market for these type of trailers here. And I do believe there is, but the market will be very niche.

I don't think so. At R300k plus for a caravan tough enough to tow off main roads one needs to skimp on the looks and spend it on comfort and toughness.
