Default Delamination - compensation from manufacturer

I know it's an ongoing topic but I was subjected to a surprise tyre delamination on the weekend on a good tar road en route to Pilanesburg.

Fortunately no dramatic loss of control nor serious damage to the vehicle and no injuries to the occupants.

As it is a serious occurrence I'd like to approach the manufacturer for compensation. I do have a range of additional photos if required.

What are members' views, experiences and advice in this regard ?
    All input welcome

How old is the tyre? If it's older than 5 years, no tyre manufacturer will honour a claim. If younger than that, I reckon you have a chance of getting at least a pro rata reimbursement.

I'll take a guess: the tyre is off a nice big bush trailer that gets used twice a year............

No it's off a Hilux that gets used continuously and is properly maintained ! Happens to be right rear if that's of any interest.

    You could try your best.
In my opinion it would be like scratching butter, out of a cow's backside, with a hot needle.
They will find a reason not to compensate.

Get a reps number and just give it a try, you may be surprised.

I've taken that advice a few times(with other things but similar situation) and often been truly surprised with the response, very helpful and sorted me out. Despite me going in being very negative and thinking I'll never get helped.

I tried this route. It is posted somewhere back here on the forum. Cooper delaminated - no gravel / no abuse. Rep got my hopes up and kept making promises which he broke and he (the Cooper rep) never even bothered to show. My contact at a tyre outlet said the Cooper rep is well known for his lax attitude. For that reason I will never run Coopers again. Someone else who had bad service from Coopers was threatened with legal action also posted on forum.

    then it's a genuine problem

some people leave their bush trailers for 6 months between trips and then tyres often degrade

Yip that was me. You will be told you hit a pothole, drove with a flat tyre, under inflated, over inflated, over loaded the vehicle. I obeyed the Khgalighadi rules and deflated to 1.6bar and then 1.4 for a 4x4 route. I was told to stick to the vehicle recommendations re tyre pressure.

Forget it, you will get no where. I was even told I had very little experience driving a 4x4, (having farmed for 40 years plus in 4x4's)

Let us know how you go.

Although not a 4x4 vehicle or tyre. I had the same with a set of Pirelli's fitted to a Vito. Tyres became noisy after 7000km. Alignment was done and had the report that it was correct. All 4 tyres had featherwear. First they said it was lack of rotation. After only 7000km? and then what difference would it have made if all 4 wore like this? Then it was a suspension problem. This excuse fell flat after they had to go inspect the vehicle at Mercedes agents and they reported suspension was a okay. Customer eventually bought a set of Goodyears. I sold the Pirelli's out of hand with a warning about the noise level, and gave the money back to him.

He still visits me regularly (the customer) and is still happy with his Goodyears.

Seems the local guys backing is much better.

    It's a 16" tyre:
    Cooper Discovery S/T MAXX LT 225/75 SR 16 M+S

Regarding age of the tyre, this seems to be encoded as someone noted earlier on another thread:
DOT UT1L 1A8 perhaps a forum member knows how to decode this.

so i may be wrong on the date - please post up a picture of the data to the right of the 1A8

the other data at the top appears to be around winter studs that the tyre can accept

I have only ever bought a BFG tyre once. And on Sunday it delaminated on me. Granted, it is an older tyre, but so are my MAXXIS and they have never given me any problems.

Will I ever buy a BFG again, sorry, no.
