    Default Strange grinding sound ??

    Hi Guys,

I have an Isuzu KB300 4x4 D/C 2005 model bakkie... my pride and joy!
My problem at the moment, is that there is a strange grinding sound while driving coming from the right side front of the vehicle. The sound can sometimes get real bad especially at low speeds iunder 80km/h, the faster i go the less it gets. Sometimes the sound gets real bad, so i have to pull over and rest a bit, then get going again, and sometimes there is no sound at all? A slight vibration can also be felt at the steering during the episodes.
I took it to my mechanic who said that the front break pads were worn badly and he replaced them, however it made no difference. Traveling a far distance yesterday the grinding sound worried me, so at my destination I took the vehicle to a local mechanic who changed the wheel bearing, as we assumed that that was the actual problem. Much to my sadness, the sound started again on my way back home in the evening... What could be the problem? Could it perhaps be something to do with the front right drive shaft. I do not travel in 4x4, and very rarely use 4x4 mode unless necessary. Has anyone on the forum experienced such a problem as well, that may be able to assist me please?
    Thank you everyone!
    Regards
    Barry

There are inner and outer bearings on the front. The hub bearing is one (which I think you have done), and the diff side bearing is the other. Another alternative is the CV has something in it.

Agree, also check the needle bearing. My suuz had whine/grind sound left front, becoming more loud as the speed picks up. I immediately suspected bearing problems. When I opened I was greeted by a bone dry outer bearing about to fall apart. Replaced both inner and outer just to make both are new.

    Hi Gents,
Thanks for your input, most appreciated!
I have now removed the hub to find that there is a problem on the drive shaft (very loose, not sure how two independent mechanic shops did not pick it up!!) , and the sleeve has collapsed. I will now send it to the CV specialists, and get it inspected and fixed properly... I hope!
    Thanks again!
    Regards, Barry

What is the severity of this issue, can i wait for my budget to allow the fix or does it need attention asap? Will it cause other problems or damage?

    That depends on many factors.

    - when last was the oil changed (current oil quality)
    - how badly the bearing and/or shaft and/or casing is already damaged

It could last for years or it could break tomorrow, there is no crystal ball. The real answer is if it starts sounding worse, it is GETTING worse.....

Swop the oil for a good synthetic IMMEDIATELY. This MIGHT, and I say again MIGHT help delay the failure.
