Default Malawi to Maun - end of August

    Hello all,

I live in Malawi and am looking for a way to get to Maun for the fabulous Okavango Delta Music Festival at the end of next month.

The start date is 29th August and I would like to avoid flying or public transport if possible. I do have a car but not 100% sure it is up to the trip, plus it would be much more fun to share the road and expenses with others.

If anyone is interested, has any ideas, or is already going this way around this time and would be happy to take one extra, please let me know.

    Many thanks,

    Bella

Hi Bella and welcome to the forum,

I can't help with ride options but can confirm that the road conditions are all okay, tar all the way, but you have to choose the correct route. Of course there might be the odd detours for road constructions in Zambia but once cleared through into Botswana you would have to travel via Nata - Gweta to Maun which is about 600 kms, roads okay with some potholes but not to serious. (not demanding 4x4 )

Hope you come right, in any case, I cannot recommend public transport as unrelaible and accident prone.

    God luck and enjoy.

Also you could try posting on one of the expat Facebook page like BTXP, I am sure you could find someone interested.

I wish I could come but can't get the time off at that time if the year.

All good roads as Kalahari said, just take your time and make it a nice trip.

No need for 4x4 bit make sure the vehicle you take is 100%, it's a lot of road !

    Cheers

    Hey Kalahari and tashtego9,

Thanks so much for the welcome replies and tips about the road.

I was thinking through Zambia would be best, rather than Moz and Zim, though it would be cool to drive down through Chobe and Savuti rather than via Nata, do you know if that's possible?

The BTXP page is also a great shout, I will give that a try.

    Cheers!

Some Botswana Expert will be along soon and answer that for you .

I haven't been to Bots in years , and when I did I went via Tete and Zim (Plumtree, Francistown etc). Given the fuel scarcity and other problems in Zim, better to go via Zambia (Mchinji border).

You can make a few nice stops (South Luangwa, Livingstone/Vic falls ).

Which car are you taking and who is checking it for you in BT?

    It is,
You can get a day visitor's permit at the Sedudu Gate in Kasane then do the Chobe part, stay overnight at Muchenje and continue to Ghha Gate - Savuti - Mababe Gate then via Mababe Mankwe to Maun.

The catch is you need to be in a proper 4x4 and need some 3-4 days for that part.
