    Hi I also have a V8 but a D3 now with 190 000km on.Without a long story,take you car to ZF and do a proper,full gearbox service(I used Triangle transmission in Bellville,also a gearbox SPECIALIST),repeat every 50 000km.You should then have no gearbox issues.I learn't this the exspensive way(at 150 000km just 5 000km after a precautionary dealer gearbox double flush!).

    Doing Mabuashehube in my D4 TDV6 3l in October towing bush trailer. What was your fuel consumption on the sand roads.

    Hi desdrake

    You need to remember that I have a V8, but on the thick sand I got anything from 3.5 - 4.5km/L towing a Jurgens Xcape.

    About 6 to 7 km/litre towing a Miskruier.

    So this afternoon I decided to remove the rear valve block from the Disco to have a closer look and to clean it. Let me know what your thoughts are?? One can clearly see the 'white stuff' around the seals. Surely this would be a good reason for a small leak and also an air compressor on its way out.

    What are the thoughts?

    for those less mechanically inclined but getting there, what exactly are we looking at here? what is that? where is it?

    The part that I took out is the rear valve block. It works very simple: There is one inlet pipe that feeds the valves and 2 outlet pipes that feed air to the 2 rear airbags. The front of the car also has a valve block to feed the 2 front air bags. So after some research and input on this very thread some people say I can remove the valve block and clean the o-rings. If the o-rings are dirty they will not seal properly and air will slowly leak and the vehicle will drop down. Apparently when the air compressor gets old silica crystals start to break down and collects in these valve blocks.

    Bottom line is it might be a pre-warning that my air compressor is getting old and might need replacing soon, but in the process it was a good exercise to clean the valve block to make it seal properly. Well that is the theory. I hope I have just fixed something. I must say it was a rather hard job to free the 2 outlet pipes as I have a long range fuel tank. In other words I could not gain access from where the spare wheel used to be.

    Hi Andre. That is exactly the problem I had with my D4 and was sorted out easily and not expensive either. My symptom was that the compressor was running all the time when the vehicle was at a stand still.

    I had my gearbox serviced by ZF in Cape Town at 105,000km , one of the best vehicle experiences I have had - very professional and courteous. Remember to leave early, or plan to spend the night nearby the workshop as they will need your vehicle for most of the day - all day if you drop the vehicle off in the morning as it has to cool down. I dropped mine off the previous evening.

    Enjoy your D4, the most versatile and capable vehicles on the road.

    Thank you for your input. I really hope I am winning with the suspension issue. I'm not too worried about the gearbox. That I will get serviced and properly checked out.

    The 'white stuff' is the silica gel crystals breaking down and getting through the filter pads.Try putting one of these kits https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AMK-Air-...53.m1438.l2649

    through the compressor.Use the forums on www.aulro.com.au or www.disco3.co.uk for the procedure.

    So after leaving the vehicle in off road hight since yesterday morning, the Disco hasn't dropped at all. I did of course measure yesterday just after leaving the vehicle to rest and this morning it is exactly as I left it. I'm sure the warmer, thicker air here in Hoedspruit also plays a part, but hopefully I just mended something.

    Ek het by Landtech Auto in Nelspruit by Johan my double flush laat doen op my ratkas. Nuwe olie en 'n buis Dr. Tranny. Dit het die ratkas se 'hunting' onder 2000rpm, en vibrasie weggeneem.
