The fact that it says "gold" everywhere in the article makes me think that is exactly what it isn't... As to why some foreigners are buy said "gold" I would not be surprised if it is just a story to drive hype...

They are testing it in Pretoria. If it is gold half the country will go there. If it is not gold anything can happen.

I doubt that it is but would make our life easier here if it is

some of my co workers are from KZN, they say that some of the old miners in the villages confirmed it's the real deal.. might be fools gold though...

But the land belongs to the King.. and I see they barricaded the area.. wonder if there will be a land reform?

Isn't there blanket mineral rights so that even if you dig up oil in your own back yard you can't just keep it? Sorry, maybe I am completely wrong, but I was wondering.

    Yes, correct.

    Simplistically:

There is what is called the surface right, and the mineral right.

The farmer or land owner owns the surface right

The state owns the mineral right.

So, if I find gold or diamonds on my property, someone else could still acquire the mineral rights, and I would have to let them mine it if they have a mining right.

There has been genuine gold found in the Melmoth / Mtonjaneni area in the past. But extremely small quantities that would not really pay commercially.

I had a discussion with Riaan van Wyk on a thread a couple of years ago.

But nothing to get excited about.

If I remember right the first one meter belongs to the land owner. This has been used extensively for diamonds and in one case for gold. Farmer was fighting with a mine as they poisoned his dam water. Then one day he realized that the water brought gold from the tailings. He started taking it out. Mine said it belongs to them. Farmer lifted middle finger and won.

Anything under ground belongs to the state.

BUT, if you do find something - be sure to put your house price up far beyond market value.

    I am fairly close.

I could make lots of money selling: spades, picks, wheelbarrows, buckets, water - to be paid in cash not gold.

I will make a lot of money.

This is only half a plan. There are two items that bring far more. One is alcohol and the other is "service" house

Yeah right. Gold as big as a mans thumb. There is plenty of iron pyrite (Fools gold) in KZN. Not much gold though.

Iron pyrite is very hard. Gold is very soft.

Gold weighs almost twice as much as lead.

So it's easy to tell the difference. There are going to be a lot of very disappointed gold miners in KZN.

The shiny stuff in the rock on the one video looked very much like pyrite. I'm intrigued by the report of gold buyers active on the site.

My gut feeling is that we are not dealing with gold. If there are traders, then why? Are they spending a few bucks to set up a legitimate image of having acquired gold, so that they can declare illegally obtained zama gold? Are they spending a few bob to pretend to buy gold to keep the people flocking in so that they can sell booze, food, services etc to them to make real money?

Time will tell, but nothing in that news article is legal. Not the digging, not selling gold, not buying gold, not having the gold in their posession.

No. She has a lot of equipment (room full) - but too busy to do many other things. She is full time pensioner and working just now (Making a drawing so she can measure and record under ground electric cables.) Maybe I should send her with a spade to KZN.

Lets put it this way. Two workholics going on pension/semi pension is - different

    To have gold license:
    - Application
    - Clean criminal record
    - Annual police clearance
    - Annual inspection of the premises, register and what ever
    - ....

To dig must have an other type of license.
