Default Egypt - Ban on 4x4s

Just a heads up, there have been several reports recently from Overlanders stuck at the Egypt border. There is a temporary ban on all 4x4 entering the country. At the moment the best way North is from port Sudan on a boat to Turkey.

    Plan your trips guys.

This sentence indicates that is in effect.

You do make a very valid point about how fake news starts but on the contrary it’s sad how quick people cry “fake news” and put their head in the sand.... this seems to be the buzzword lately.

Here’s proof of first hand experience by travelers in the area - snapshots taken from the Overlanding Africa group on Facebook. Feel free to take a look for yourself

Maybe posting links or screenshots from the get go would help.

Thank you for posting this warning DETOUR-GP. I follow various overlanding sources on the internet including the Facebook group you mention.
This does not appear to be fake news. There are a number of overland independant travellers with their 4x4 vehicles impounded at the border or in ports in Egypt and they are currently reporting on this. This appears to have been the case for a number of weeks and is apparently due to the Egyptian authorities' fear that 4x4 vehicles will be used by Mulim extremists to launch attacks within Egypt.

One can only assume that these regulations are temporary and that sanity will return. Then again Egypt has long been one of the most difficult African countries to enter and traverse independantly in your own 4x4 vehicle.

Please can the moderators - or the original poster - move this to the North Africa section of this forum. It is currently geographically challenged being in the East Africa section...

Having spoken to friends yesterday that are stuck at the border and now seeking alternative routes around Egypt, it seems this unofficial ban is still in effect.

I have had first hand confirmation that 4x4's are now allowed in again (coming from Sudan) and that the obligation to install trackers has been cancelled. Alexandria same story, but that's anecdotal. 4x4's and motorcycles still not allowed into Sinai when coming from Cairo. Cheers, Bas
