    Default ZD30 Turbo Failure

    Hi Gents;

    So this morning my Turbo on my 2005 Hardbody 3.0TD decided it had had enough... original was replaced/reconditioned by previous owner around 90k km; current km's is sitting @ 260k - so don't think I did too bad...
    Luckily doesn't seem like it totally disintegrated and no damage(prelim report) to engine...

    Vehicle is with Graham and obviously I trust him and his wealth of knowledge to have the bakkie back on the road in no time...

    In the meantime, can someone assist with the Turbo-nr on the ZD30's? Alert Engine Parts require a Turbo nr.
    Also - where does one shop for a recon / new turbo in the greater Pretoria-area?

    Thanks in advance.

    The turbo on the HB is a Hitachi HT12-19b/d. Stallion Turbo- Pta should be able to sort you out.

    Sorry to hear of the misfortune?

    Are you the same guy that posted on the Nissan Facebook group that he is concerned about why his ZD30 spins it rears wheels even in third just tapping the accelerator?

    It's a Hitachi Turbo Charger.

    When mine failed Alert did not have stock.
    Alpine Turbo in Honeydew had replacements in Stock.

    Gents; thanks for all the constructive and assisting comments - really do appreciate it!

    Update: - Graham has stripped - centre/core is "m03r-toe"... Graham has sourced a new one in Jhb at a reasonable price. He'll collect tomorrow.

    Inevitably, vehicle was due for service so will have that also done whilst the vehicle is with Graham.
    Really hoping to have the Bakkie running at a reasonable bill, whilst knowing it is in good mechanical condition.

    Once again realized how utter useless Nissan's service is

    @ Nato - Thanks for the heads-up - tried them and they seem to be able to assist - If tomorrow's plan does't work out will go by there shop

    @ Swakop - hahahaha :-) ; no, definitely not me - @ 260k kms, it aint-no teenager anymore and I treat it gentle - then it won't leave me next to the road or in the bush... (this morning's incident happened as I pulled into the office basement).
    Re - Turbo Works can only assist with recon - no new units available

    @ Blouhond - thanks, will keep them in-mind :-)

    @ Jelo - thanks for the constructive comments.... I still believe the grenades were pre-2003 models....

    Thanks again all - will keep all posted....

    Out of curiosity what were the symptoms? I blew my turbo in Mozambique a few years back and it was a pretty spectacular failure.

    Hi Dale;
    Mine was just an extremely loud whining-noise - I immediately took my foot of the accelerator when it started and luckily was able to coast/free to an off-ramp and our offices is next to the N1 - drove the bit between highway and office below turbo-range...

    I could not check if any smoke when it happened - I did try and check the dash for any lights etc.

    Yes, it was tongue in cheek, I actually think the ZD30 is a decent motor if it isn't mistreated with chips and things.

    I had a turbo whine/whistle - turns out to have been a gasket on exhaust mani side.

    upon removal, wrong studs/bolts were used to secure manifold, gasket was "repaired" previously, not replaced, and then i found the source of the very tiny oil leak.
    the seal went when the bearings and stuffs in the turbo started wearing (the center shaft?).
    ended up recon turbo, replaced all gaskets on that side with originals, and nuts and studs - entire job cost around R23k.

    So goodluck Martinj.

    Last year.
    Turbo Recon alone on invoice: R9875 (excl VAT) parts. Diagnostics: R550
    Labour was R3500 but this was for everything, so there is quite a bit of work they did in this Labour cost, thus not representative of the Turbo Recon labour only.

    Hi All;

    Thanks again for all the advice; chatter and commentary....

    Update from my side:
    -Graham worked magic and really went the extra mile!
    -The core was shot and we sourced a new core - casing, according to Graham still good....

    As indicated, had it serviced as well and Graham has given it a clean bill of health!

    Again, I cannot express my gratitude enough towards Graham for assisting with no advance notice/arrangement!

    Guys - if you need peace of mind and great service at a great rate - do not look any further than GTech Auto...

    Also had the good luck in meeting fellow forum member today when collecting the bakkie.....

    When I replaced the Hitachi turbo a brand new unit was R11k. Was in 2015 / 2016 - cannot recall exactly when
    The expensive exercise was the diesel pump recon.

    I was looking for one - but in CPTN i could not find a replacement unit for under R15K.
    but then there was quite a bit of other bits and pieces i had to sort out which this place did.

    @Martinj - do you mind posting what work was all done? and a rough figure? (i'd like to gauge the pricing over the years for this model)
