We LOVE the northern part of KNP - just a pity its so far for us from Pinetown.

We were "forced" to stray at Punda Maria campsite for two weeks once with serious vehicle problems (eventually rescued by this forum!!!)
But it was the best place ever to be stranded!
Our site was AT the fence right next to and overlooking the waterhole, just to the right of the bird hide.
Unfortunately a diesel leak from the fuel station pipe just next to our site was a little off-putting.

We saw so many animals just sitting at the campsite - no choice, no vehicle.

Eventually we could tell the time of day by the time the animals would appear - including leopard, elephant, buffalo, eagles and many many more.

Other favorite places: Pafuri picnic site and drives along the riverside, the circular drive bear to Punda camp, also going southward Tsendzi - one of our favorites too.

Also very easy from there (with passport and vehicle papers) to go across the Limpopo at Pafuri into Moz and up to Gonarezhou in Zim (about 65 Km from Pafuri to Zim border post - but of course 4x4 recommended!)

For me the central and northern parts are the best.
Do not expect a zoo though.

We spent 5 days at Punda last year in July.
It is the most awful place to visit in KNP.
I could not wear my designer long pants because it was too hot.
Although it was 18 deg in the evening all the staff was wearing jerseys and coats.
There is a light switched on at the waterhole all night and all the animals come to see the humans in the box above the fence.
The waterhole sounds like a cattle at kraal during the night, with all the buffalo. The noise is incomprehensible.
The Elephants don't like the Buffs and try chasing them away. Its awful to see the poor buffs being bullied..
The resident Genet patrols along the fence at night.
The lions worry the Nyala at the waterhole. Making the Nyala very nervous. Poor animals.
The resident Leopard comes to drink water at the waterhole every second night.
There is a laundry that actually works.
The swimming pool was neat and clean.
    The restaurant is actually working.
The best thing about Punda is that you have permission to shoot the Vervets with a catapult.
I quite enjoyed them stealing our food.
    Please don't go there.
Too many animals and birds and not enough people. Not a traffic jam to be found.......

    In die kol beskrywing Pieter.
May I add. The Mahogany loop has the most beautiful trees in the whole park. Just be alert to the fact and you will agree.
And may I repeat, Klopperfontein is also one of the most awesome spots. Just spent some time there and you will be amazed by the ellie's (they may just corner you in the parking spot at the big dam) and you will see the local lion pride

At Punda you need to arrive early to get a decent spot at or close to the fence and waterhole and then hope that someone doesn't squeeze their lodge into an almost non existing space between you and the fence, and then sit and watch 7de laan or whatever until 22h00 instead of the waterhole. Fortunately this happened on our last day/night

The river drive from Crooks direction Pafuri was great, plenty ellies and buffalo, the lions were very well hidden if close by but the bush was also very dense. Were also lucky to find a spotted hyena and her cub at one of the stormwater pipes next to the road (about 20 metres from the side of the road)

At Tsendze we were allocated a stand in the middle although some fence sites were vacant. The reception at Mopani claimed these were all booked - another surprise - didn't know that you can book a particular site. Still don't know how to go about doing it. Anyway, the bush around Tsendze was also very dense. On the morning of our departure we hit the jackpot. About 1 to 200 metres outside the gate we were blessed with 3 cheetas playing around in an area 50 to 100 metres from the road.

Will definitely go back to these camps if the facilities remain in the condition we found them

You only need to contact the duty manager, it is against the rules to bother your neighbor 7e laan or not.

If that does not work a little whisper in Glen Phillip's ear and the perpetrator wil have a guided tour straight to the exit gate and said duty manager will be sweeping leaves

I know of 2 confirmed (photograph) sightings of Brown hyena but they are very skittish, spotted go for them in a big way. That is the reason why they are reasonably common in Pilanesberg. Strange enough there has recently been a sighting of a single spotted hyena in Pilanesberg.

If you are a birder you are in for some good spotting, look carefully at the parrots, Punda is the most southern most reach of their range and can often be seen in the jackal berry trees on the road leading to the camp. the ring road around the camp has some great photo possibilities especially the huge buffalo herd that pops down to the river to drink

Go call the Section Ranger ..who lives in a house just past the entrance gate ..He is in charge of the Camp ..He would have sorted that out Easy Peezy straight away ..I dont spend R 10 K for petrol alone to drive from PE to N Kruger and put up with garbage campers
